1976 Time Capsule Done Right
This movie is to the ‘70s what “American Graffiti” was to the 1950s. If you lived through 1976 you will be impressed how they got everything right! Many period films do not, especially the ones being made since this came out in 1993. The Seventies renaissance was just beginning, so the film seems fresh and it even pre-dates “That ‘70s Show” by half-a-decade as well as “Boogie Nights” (1997) which is in my Top 5 movies on all-time. There is no real “plot” here; the script just follows a bunch of high school kids around on the last day of school and lets the characters do the rest. Nothing exceptional about his movie, but it works really well as a nostalgia piece, and in hindsight, it’s fun seeing the actors who were just starting out here who went on to bigger things (Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey). The soundtrack is excellent including music from 1972-76 featuring the likes of Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Foghat, Nazareth, Kiss, Sweet, Dr. John, Rick Derringer and more.
