Don't give 5 stars easily, but ...
This kettle does just exactly what it was designed to do. It heats water quickly, pours easily without dripping and I love the way it mates with the base. The plastic windows in the sides tempt me to drop a star, but the windows do perform a function and I have not noticed any negative effects on taste.UPDATEOK. I've been using this kettle now for over a year and a half and I'm still very happy with it. I have been using it at least 2 to 3 times a day.I use it for coffee in the morning: It's very easy to pour over my Chemex. We usually have tea later in the day, and often some herbal tea before bed.It is also useful to quickly boil water to jumpstart making pasta, much quicker than boiling water on the stoveFor such a bargain price, this has been an excellent kettle. It is still like new, and I expect more years of service, but even if it failed tomorrow (which would be very unexpected) I would be very satisfied with this product and would probably order another.Another Update: I can't believe it's been over 7 years since I bought this kettle. It still works just as well as the day I bought it!

more than you may want to know about kettles
Maybe more than you want to know about my experiences with cordless kettles....In 1995 we lived in New Zealand for 3 months, and just about every home had a cordless plastic kettle (with exposed heating coil) that was made there. We wanted one, but couldn't bring one home due to US voltage differences. But then Oster came out with one in the US, and we bought it, I believe, in 1996, and loved it. In about 2003 we thought it might be getting "old," and gave it to my daughter to "finish its life." We replaced it with a plastic T-FAL (exposed coil), which was adequate but very poorly balanced for lifting with the big side handle (always felt like a strain). It lasted about 3 years. So in 2006, for our next kettle we chose the Cuisinart KUA-17, delighted with the look of a metal kettle, the unexposed coil, the top location of the handle for easy lifting, and the 3-year warranty. We really liked this kettle! A couple months ago (after 4½ years' use) the electric contact became intermittent and unreliable. We found a possible "fix" from an excellent online tutorial [... ], but that didn't work for us because the problem was in the switch on the side. It was past warranty, so now it was time to select a new kettle. I ordered a Maxi-Matic EKT-6863 Elite from Amazon for $46 (had free shipping) based on the descriptions by the website and several reviews. It was ALMOST like the Cuisinart - looks like a real kettle, unexposed coil, etc. As others mentioned, however, the switch seemed a bit flimsy, and it turns out it has a one-year warranty. I had not seen projections of how long others have found it to last. I liked that it had view windows for the water level. I found the handle had less hand room under it, and the lid was more awkward to take off than the Cuisinart. So my dilemma became, "Do I settle for this Maxi-Matic kettle or exchange it for a Cuisinart that cost $66 (from Amazon with free shipping, but a $7 deduction from the refund value for the return shipping)?" After 3 weeks I decided that if I'm going to have something I use several times a day for a projected 4 ½ years, the extra money would be about 2 pennies a day difference, the warranty was longer, and I would just be happier back with the Cuisinart. It's due to be delivered today. MEANWHILE, the "old" Oster is STILL WORKING well for my daughter!!!

Yes, IT WILL most likely FAIL. However fixing it takes 30 seconds. Here's how.
My review should actually have 3 stars on average: it's a great kettle (would get 5 stars), but it will most likely fail for everyone (would get 1 star). But since this review is for those whose kettle failed, I'm sticking to 1 star. Here's the most common failures I've read about (and of which I was a victim):- the metallic mesh (apparently just acting as a filter in the spout - but really having a much more critical role) corrodes, its pieces end up in your tea, and you end up throwing away whatever is left.- the kettle stops switching off once the water boilsThese failures usually happen in that order, and are related. The solution in three lines: As unbelievably as it sounds, the mesh is not there (just) to filter the water, but to create additional pressure inside the kettle. If your mesh corrodes and you end up throwing it away, all you have to do is make (or buy?) a simple spout cover which will do the job of increasing the pressure inside the kettle. I improvised a spout lid with aluminum foil, and the kettle is working perfectly again. For the same reason, you should not expect the kettle to work if you boil water without the kettle lid on.If anyone if curious of how the kettle actually works and why you need the extra pressure build up, feel free to ask. (Figuring the source of this trivial problem took me (engineering phd) and my parents (physics phds) two full weeks to figure it out, after reading tons of forums, disassembling a couple of kettles, and testing each part!)Hope this helps save a couple of (almost) perfectly working kettles from being thrown to the trash.

Works perfect till the red button do not work any more.
It was well made! And works like a charm now. Hope it will keep working well. Recommend you to buy. It is a little loud but it boil the water very fast! But after 6 days, it will not shut itself down. Disappointing... :-(I am planning to return it. Troublesome...
