I got myself a new iRobot Roomba i7+ over eight months ago, and this is what I found. It looks great, even if one would keep it as an accessory - it will make your home look smart. It’s simple to find a spot for it as it requires a lot less than what it seems (or even suggests in the instructions). It requires some maintenance as it collects dust a lot, and it’s unable to vacuum around the charging station (even in wider locations than mine).iRobot advertises it as a smart vacuum, compared to most other robot vacuums, but I doubt that. I haven't moved large furniture for over six months, but some bits and bobs do move. Roomba doesn’t adapt. Roomba hits full force, even some of the furniture that’s been in place since day one, but it’s relentless to bags and small furniture that’s where it doesn’t belong. i7 also has massive issues with cleaning corners, small elevations (ie by the window), and it manages to map some non-existing parts of the flat. Even setting up no-go zones doesn’t work. I’m unsure what that camera is for, and it might have done a lot better with a lidar scanner. It’s also strange how it’s unable to suck granules of pepper or tiny rocks, and it just shoves them around.Where I’m happy with i7 is the bedroom. The carpet floor is nicely cleaned, and for the first time, I don’t have dust collected under the bed. Saying that it’s horrible with rugs. I have a very flat one, and it keeps it flipping despite the non-slip net under it. And it doesn't do a good job where the rug meets the floor or furniture. My friends often ask about the dining room and under the table, between the chairs. It is a hit and miss. One day it does well if you manage to line up chairs nicely. If any of the chairs are not lined up or if it “enters” under a wrong angle, then it doesn’t know how to get out. It has some set patterns and keeps on banging instead of just maybe reversing. Sometimes it misses the exit for 1 mm, and it keeps on struggling. The app (I have iOS) is not the best, but it serves its purpose. It has glitches and downtimes with its online service, but most of the time, it simply works. You can use it to edit rooms, zones and with the latest version, you can map your smart home with telling you where every smart device is on. You also need the app to set up routines. Without the IFTT, you can only set the times and days you want it to run.Home automation is… not great. I tested it with Alexa, and it works, but it’s not easy, and you will end up with additional questions, so not cute if you wish to show it off to your friends and family. No integration with Homekit and Siri. IFTT services allow customisation of scenes with many options and scenarios - but they don’t work smoothly. It ended up vacuuming randomly, regardless of set conditions. The best part of it is the charging station. One bag can hold six months worth of vacuuming (daily: hallway, kitchen, dining and sitting area, twice-weekly the bedroom).Overall, I was so eager to get a smart robot vacuum and probably because of the high expectations I held - it quickly resulted in disappointment. It’s loud, slams hard, and it’s just ok with vacuuming. If you decide on getting it, make sure it has a charging station as it’s the best thing about it. If you’re in the Apple ecosystem and strive for a smart home, consider alternatives.
