The garden version of "The House that Jack Built"
Double page spreads of colored pencil art on various colored papers do a good job of listing the different stage's of a kid's ambitious garden (I would like a garden like this). I like how insect stages, birds and eggs, flower parts and even 9 species of lady beetles with eggs and larva are included in the border's of each spread.

Light hearted educational picture book for kids of all ages
Whoever coined the proverb, "a picture is worth a thousand words" could have been talking about Jack's Garden by Henry Cole. This book is an excellent illustration of how, step by step, a garden is planted and what the seeds and living creatures do from that point on. We get to see above and below the soil as the garden progresses throughout the season. There are all the names of the plants and creatures labelled neatly next to each, on the main page and in the margins. Best of all, the classic children's poem about the house that Jack built is modified into a catchy text for each picture that makes understanding the magic of a little garden ecosystem effortless for kids as young as three years.Top notch illustrations and a unique format set this picture book apart and earned it a permanent place in my collection. I only wish I had it in hardback!

I just wish the text lived up to the rest of the book.
"This is the garden that Jack planted" is the start of the book and on each page another line is added to the run on sentence until you reach a sentence that is 51 words long.... I found the text therefore uninteresting, unimaginative, and at times an awkward tongue twister. However, I enjoyed the artwork though at times needing a bit more contrast. I loved how everything was labeled. I liked that you could use this to teach the life cycle of plants and their needs... as well as food chains. I just wish the text lived up to the rest of the book.

Sticky dirty cover!
Great story, just disappointed that the book arrived soiled and sticky. The book cover should have been wiped off at the very least. I expect second hand books to be gently used when advertised as good condition but this was just gross!

Good Choice
I am a first grade teacher, and I send home "Book bags" with my students. Inside are two books of a certain topic or author. They have to read the books with or to an adult and answer a couple of questions. This was a very good book for a wide range of reading abilities. The writing was repetitive, but then there were extra pictures and names of the plants for those students that are more advanced.

Perfect!
We have always been a fan of Henry Coles work. Beautifully written and illustrated. The perfect snuggle and read with your children or grandchildren!

This book is brilliant for reading with children and helping them understand all the processes and natural elements in a garden. My son said "if we work really hard we can have a garden like Jack" at the end of the book - perfect! Only watch out is that much of the flora/fauna is USA based, although my kids didn't mind that and I found it really interesting.

Great book on nature
Jack's Garden gives an overview of the whole ecology in a garden but in a story format. There's a lot to talk about on each page depending on the interest of your child. I loved the illustrations in this book. The only con is most of the things are not applicable in the Indian context. For e.g- the flowers shown are Lupine, spiderwort, etc which even I have never heard of. So it's quite difficult for the child to relate to.

Sensory story
I found this book 'rich pickings' for adapting to the sensory level of my class - all pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties. The cadence and rhyme of the story are good and there is so much opportunity for using it to introduce pupils to the objects, substances, creatures contained within it in a fun way.
