This unit will work fine when connected to a breaker point.
This product worked as expected for my application which was to install on a John Deere 316 garden tractor. The top 3 spade connectors (7, 8, &9) and the shrouded connectors 1 and 3 were not connected because they were not needed. The shrouded terminals 2, 4, 5, and 6 were connected.I cut away part of the shroud for easy access to those pins.Terminal 2 was connected to the one and only breaker point which had previously been connected to the negative side of the coil.but now disconnected from the coil. Terminal 4 was connected to the battery 12vdc + side of the coil. Terminal 5 was connected to the negative side of the coil. Terminal 6 was connected to chassis ground which is the same as the negative side of the 12 vdc battery.I bolted the igniter unit to a heat sink to keep it from over heating and then mounted that assembly to a location near the ignition coil that had a chance of avoiding engine heat. Regards.

Lasted 3 months
Read the other reviews where more than one person stated this only lasted 3 months. Was thinking that they probably didn't add the correct heat sink compound and this affected the heat transfer (heat transfer from module to distributor housing). I Added a name brand heat sink compound before installing and had the experience of only lasting 3 months. Left me stranded on the side of the road. For the last month or so I've had some hard starting issues, replaced with a new module and that went away also.Edit: 9/8/21, Popped the cover off the module, the wire opened for the for the "Hall Effect Ground" (traced it out to the first pin for the distributor connection, marked in black. See pictures, not sure if I have a ground issue that caused this. Will update if I have another premature failure. I purchased a Motorcraft module to take it's place.

Did what it is supposed to
Purchased this to address a misfire in my 1989 ford with Thick Film Ignition (TFI). Installed easily with a special tool (which I already had). Also, instead of using the silicone grease supplied with the module, I used heat sink compound between the metal base and the distributor for better heat dissipation. Overall, this resolved the misfire issue, and I've driven about 800 miles with the new unit, and no problems so far!
