Facts the Historians Leave Out: A Confederate Primer

Knowledgeable
Haven been a high school teacher for years, this book was great to read. Most of our books today are a watered down version of history. I have always looked for books that give a different view. This was a knowledgeable and interesting read.

A basic primer regarding the actual causes of the War Against Southern Independence (1861-1865)
This is a basic booklet written about the founding of these states united together in 1776, which starts with the 5 great movements which caused the founding of this country (the 1st Continental Congress, the agitation for armed resistance, the Declaration of Independence, the War of the Revolution, & the adoption of the Constitution). It goes on to briefly explain the history of the country up to the secession of the Southern states in 1860, and explaining (often from Yankee & foreign sources) the beginning actions which started the War.The chapters are titled as follows:1. How Our Nation Was Born2. Was the War of the Sixties Fought Over the Issue of Slavery?3. Did the Southern Armies Fight to Preserve Slavery?4. Who Imported the Slaves From Africa?5. Were Southern Masters Brutal to Their Slaves?6. The Emancipation Proclamation7. "The Great Emancipator's" Estimate of the Negro8. Why the Planters Fought to Keep Their Slaves9. What are States' Rights?10. Northern Violation of States' Rights11. Was Secession Treason?12. Was George Washington a Traitor?13. The South Fired the First Shot14. The Starving Garrison15. Who Began the War?16. Those"Fire-Eating" Southerners17. "That is Magnificent, But That is Not War"18. A Spectacle for the Gods19. The "Result" Which Lincoln Foresaw20. Was There Suffering in Southern Prisons?21. With Malice Toward None, With Charity Toward All (Lincoln Inaugural March 4, 1865)22. Some Reasons Why the South Seceded23. Meet Jefferson DavisWith a 2-page Preface & 4 pages of appendices (2 of them) this booklet comes to a total of 77 easy-to-read pages.Admittedly Mr. Tilley's writing is on a school student's reading level. The preface clearly states that the booklet is extracted "from his more impressive studies in American political history". a few reviewers have written here that they don't know where to get more complete verification of the statements presented for children in this booklet. The best source I can recommend for adult readers new to this kind of historic presentation is a 2-volume book titled "America's Caesar" by Greg Loren Durand. It is available as printed version for around $44+ or as PDF for around $15 (both from The Confederate Reprint Company, one of Greg's companies). You can also order the 2-volume book from Amazon.

Facts that I never knew!.
The book was very well written, documented, and informative. I have never thought that Lincoln was a great president, but never realized how devious and unscrupulous he was. I also learned a lot about Jefferson Davis. The book is a good read

Excellent and short read
The southern Civil War is marred by modern rhetoric and political correctness. The writers perspective is from the 1930’s so if you are looking for an unbiased observation and study with facts from a perspective unaffected by this modern age, look no further. The book is relatively short for anyone looking for a history lesson they can actually commit to and finish. I bought several copies of this book and have shared it with many people. BUY THIS BOOK.

A Glossed-over Account, Yet Worth Reading
For everyone lamenting this booklet as being of a child's reading level, yes, even the introduction makes no secret of it in that the 1951 edition was originally titled "A Youth's Confederate Primer." It is for that very reason I believe this booklet makes for any newcomer to Civil War history a fair introduction to the Southern argument. The content calls to point those who partook and how in the market of slave-trading, the treatment of said slaves, the right to and reasons for secession, Lincoln's motives/maneuvers, as well as prison conditions and the cultural hostilities between the two resentful regions. Regarding the author's tone, clearly the matters are romanticized, sentimental if not grandiose, skewed even. Whether or not a reader agrees/identifies with the position of the author, the political points made therein open curious doors for further research. Some claims are ludicrous, others thought-provoking. Nevertheless, in any matter of dispute, all sides ought to be granted fair audience. I, for one, appreciate living in a country that affords true freedom of speech that reading materials (however controversial or mainstream) may be published and possessed. Although it may be stated that the bulk if not entirety of this content may be found online already for free, some of us still appreciate actual books. I'm mostly shocked to see it was printed on the very date I placed the order; talk about hot off the press!
