Delve deep into the psyche of a serial killer attempting to teach society about its sins
A serial killer sick of society’s corruption, Kevin Spacey. An old detective tired of the depravity of his city and the crimes that leads to, Morgan Freeman. A young and over zealous cop trying to prove himself, Brad Pitt. Those are the main characters in David Fincher’s Se7en a psychological thriller that changed the game when it came out.Spacey’s character is committing the seven deadly sins in what he believes will be a teaching moment for society. Freeman has the brains to break down the killer’s modus operandi, while Pitt is over his head and eventually becomes a victim. The film revolves around Spacey committing the crimes, while Freeman does all the research to figure out what he’s doing. Freeman knows where things are heading and that that Spacey can’t stop it. Still, it’s his job as police to continue with the investigation. Pitt is almost along for the ride and becomes increasingly angry that they can’t stop the murders. The movie has Fincher’s trademark dark hue throughout. Even when it’s sunny outside Fincher liked to give his scenes a shade to them to represent the mood of the film. Each murder becomes more and more sick. Thankfully Fincher saved the audience from seeing many of the gory details. As the movie progresses it goes deeper and deeper into the dark hole of Spacey’s psyche via Freeman’s work. That’s where all the drama comes from. Of course there’s a twist at the end for the last of the 7 deadly sins. In the ened this proved to be one of the great procedural and psychological movies of its time.

it was a great movie. Although I'd have to say Morgan Freeman ...
My wife forced me to put 5 stars on it because she has a crush on Brad Pitt. However, it was a great movie. Although I'd have to say Morgan Freeman was better than Brad, but don't tell my wife. But she doesn't read Amazon reviews and has no idea that I wrote one.

One of the best movies of the modern horror genre
Very good example of the horror genre, about a serial killer who chooses his victims from people who commit sins (7 deadly sins, hence the title of the movie). Brad Pitt plays the rookie cop David Mills who is new on the force, and Morgan Freeman plays Detective Lieutenant William Somerset who is close to his retirement. The movie is very dark and stylish, with a gothic and film noir visual style. This is a type of movie most enjoyed by the fans of the horror genre. It's a serial killer movie but it has a very surprise and unusual ending. Until the last act, it is still a pretty good movie but it is the final act that elevates the movie to another level. All of the actors are great. But then again, it is the final act where everything, including the acting and the story reaches new heights.Blu-ray HD picture and audio quality are excellent and worth upgrading from a standard DVD edition. Special Features (taken from Blu ray book edition): 4 Commentaries Featuring Director David Fincher, Actors Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman and other collaborators on the film, Additional/Extended Scenes, Alternate Endings, Exploration of the Opening Title Sequence from Multiple Video Angles with Various Audio Mixes and 2 Commentary tracks, Production Design and Still Photographs with Commentaries, The Notebooks: Full Motion Video Details "John Doe" Writings, Mastering for the Home Theater: Includes Alternate Angles and Audio Between Original and New Masters, Theatrical Trailer

Police detectives hunt a bizarre serial killer in a large, crime-ridden city.
To me, SEVEN blazed the trail for the modern American crime detection thriller. Realistic urban settings, often in poor or seedy neighborhoods, rainy weather, and mentally hardened police officers characterize the dark mood of this excellent film. Morgan Freeman is great as Somerset, the intellectual, world-weary senior detective who plans to retire to a farm and forget urban life. Brad Pitt (Detective Mills) is highly believable as the cocky younger detective, not overly bright, who has transferred in from a smaller city to be an investigator in the big leagues, which in itself is viewed as highly unusual by his colleagues, including Somerset. Lee Ermey has a small but entertaining role as the captain of the homicide investigation unit, and Kevin Spacey is terrifyingly bland but deadly as the serial murderer. Gwyneth Paltrow has an interesting role as the sweet, good-natured wife of MIlls; the film was produced during the time that she and Pitt were a real-life couple.SEVEN was released in 1995. Directed by David Fincher.

Has it really been so long?
Jeez, it seems like it was a decade at the longest this movie came out... not two and a half. Regardless, what a great film, even by today's standards. It's dark, moody, well written, I didn't find myself put off by the dated appearance in the slightest, and was pretty immediately re-immersed in the dialog and happenings. Seven is a fantastic Hollywood "thriller-killer" type affair. I do have to point out that with a masters in forensic psychology, now, the movie doesn't ring as such a "well written glimpse into the mind of an insane person" as it did when I was a kid. It is SO Hollywood that it's absurd intellectually, but again, at the risk of being redundant, it's so well written and so well acted you don't care. That is the litmus test for a good movie, if you can't forget it's just entertainment and get wrapped up in how implausible everything is, it's not a good movie. Seven is a good movie.

Seven, a SOTL Sequel
This is a clever movie filled with suspense and some thrilling action. It's like watching a sequel to Silence of the Lambs, and the bonus is watchingMorgan Freeman & Brad Pitt do their thing together on screen. Kevin Spacey, as John Doe, makes the most of his on screen time by being as creepy as Hannibal Lector (a wonderful Anthony Hopkins) in Silence of the Lambs. I've seen this movie a number of times and it still gives methe "willies" whenever I watch it, but it's so good that I just can't resist picking it up - like a good mystery novel. If you like the slow unraveling of a good solid murder-mystery, then get the popcorn, turn out the lights and get ready to be "creepified."
