Horror starring Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, a man who was born with a gift he didn't want - the ability to clearly recognise the half-breed angels and demons that walk the earth in human skin. Constantine was driven to take his own life to escape the tormenting clarity of his vision, but he failed. Resuscitated against his will, he found himself cast back into the land of the living. Now, marked as an attempted suicide with a temporary lease on life, he patrols the earthly border between heaven and hell, hoping in vain to earn his way to salvation by sending the devil's foot soldiers back to the depths. But Constantine is no saint. Disillusioned by the world around him and at odds with the one beyond, he's a hard-drinking, hard-living bitter hero who scorns the very idea of heroism. When a desperate but skeptical police detective (Rachel Weisz) enlists his help in solving the mysterious death of her beloved twin sister (also played by Weisz), their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a catastrophic series of otherworldly events, the two become inextricably involved and seek to find their own peace at whatever cost.

Errors on our reality abound
This film has a catalogue of errors including:1) God is depicted as being distant and uninterested in the world2) God is depicted as making a "wager" with Satan on who may win the most souls3) The Archangel Gabriel is depicted as an androgynous being who hates mankind4) The Archangel Gabriel collaborates with the son of Satan "Mammon" to try and bring about the end of days4) Angels are depicted as being able to become mortal5) Satan is depicted as being willing to help humanity6) Magic is portrayed positively7) Demons are fiend like creatures who are vulnerable to being punched!8) Satan has a son9) Prayer is openly mocked10) God is openly mockedConclusion - if you hate the God of the Bible you will enjoy this film. If you are a Christian then if you watch this film you will see what is being served up as propaganda, SORRY! harmless entertainment to the masses....

One of my favourites...... as a Christian!
I AM a Christian. I love my God. I also very much like this film! It is harmful only in the way that zombie films, vampire lore (which I also adore) and lots of other fantasy stuff is harmful.... if you take it seriously.I find this film refreshing in that;1) It takes as it's central theme that God and satan are real2) It follows that Heaven and hell are also real3) It takes a tortured soul and portrays his fight as being on the side of goodEverything else is a fantasy film guys- loosen up!Some other favourite films of mine ;Europa ReportThe GodfatherSilent RunningSerenityPandorumMoon

Modern sword and sorcery romp
This is basically a sword and sorcery fantasy, set in a contemporary world. Constantine (Keanu Reeves) is the gallant but flawed knight in shining armour. Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) is the feminist damsel, whose twin sister (also Rachel Weisz) is in distress. The plot revolves around a fantasy world, where God is real, the Devil, the angels and the demons are also real and, where Constantine (neither angel nor demon) takes it upon himself to send trespassing demons back to Hell, in the hope of 'buying' himself a place in Heaven. It's not a bad film, as long as you can accept the ridiculous premise of angels and demons running amok, as a normal, everyday occurrence (Well, it's no less or more likely than zombies). There is nothing either outstanding or ground-breaking, either in acting, scenery, musical score or special effects. Keanu looks younger and there is a moment when Rachel's clothing gets all wet and semi see-through. Does that count? If you are deeply religious, you won't like it. You may have a tendency to take it too seriously. My advice? Lighten up. It's based on a comic, not The Bible.

Stop comparing this to christianity.
This is a great film, not very true to the Hellblazer comics as well which is usual of these early cinematic universe films.Seeing the comments about Christianity and the portrayal of it in the movie making people upset, guess what? It's a movie, not a religious documentary for Pete's sake.Anyway, all star cast with CGI that has held up amazingly for an '05 film and a decent plot for a standalone film, there has been talks from no other than Peter Stormare (portraying Lucifer) that there is a sequel in the works. You will enjoy this even as a religious person if you can disassociate reality from a movie. 5/5.

How to destroy a brilliant character
I have no words. This film should't be called "Constantine" - and definitely doesn't live up to expectations, when compared to the original comics. I feel betrayed by its shallowness, Reeve's lack of (British) humour, and all the other annoying characters - except, perhaps, Gabriel (Tilda). Chaz was never meant to be a vassal, and God was pretty absent from Constantine's thoughts (he got cured from lung cancer after making a pact with the devil - three of them, to be precise - nothing to do with God's official pardon to sacrifice. Theologically this isn't correct either. Jesus was supposed to be the last sacrifice...). Anyway. Something about this film makes me wonder if the Catholic Church itself wasn't involved with the writing of the script. Outrageous travesty.Wish I never came across this parody... - make yourself a favour, and read the comics. So much more interesting (both visually and conceptually). This film is just... annoying.

I have no background from the comics.
Keanu Reeves - CheckDemons getting their butt kicked - CheckCat in the movie - CheckReferences to Christianity - CheckIf you don't mind a couple of jump scares (literally a couple) now and then or a theological theme (I.e. Heaven vs Hell type dealio) and also like action movies, I reckon you may also like this one. Personally I love it, I only just found out it was on Amazon Movies so I had to buy it asap.I don't know how compares to the comics - but it's a great movie even without the prior knowledge of the comics.I saw someone kicking off about it not living up to the comics - which hey, I haven't read them, that might be true, but hell - if going in without reading the comics lets me enjoy a Keanu Reeves movie where he kicks demon butt then I'm not gonna read the comics. (Kidding, I might at some point, I hear they're pretty good).

Good but technically not perfect.
Much of the dialogue is all but wispered, then you get crashes of sound and music. Means having the remote control in hand to drop volume for the very loud bursts, after quiet dialogue. It also means needing the subtitles on so you catch what's said; pausing to read the subtitles. Or rewinding ten seconds to catch what was said or see the subtitles. The movie is OK. Third time I watched it now. Rating all things considered, after first viewing was a solid 4/5.
