A real waste of time for the electronics hobbyist
A real waste of time for the electronics hobbyist. Rarely have I purchased a more worthless book. It went into the trash. Enough said ?

Know What You're Buying
I've tried to get into this book twice now, and both times I've failed. I'm a beginner electronics hobbiest and I'm currently setting up an electronics workshop in my basement, so this book seemed like a perfect fit for me. The first chapter is useful in selecting tools, but its a bit out of date (Radio Shack is mentioned at least a dozen times). From there, each chapter seemed to cover a different electronic component: resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers, transistors, and so on. Each chapter starts with a very short summary of what the component does, and then goes on a lengthy and detailed description of all the different ways each part can be manufactured, which I guess is helpful when selecting components. He also includes quite a bit of math along with experiments that you can perform to get the full understanding of what these components are doing in a real circuit. I wanted a book heavy on math and circuit analysis because I feel like that's the best way to really understand what's going on in a circuit, instead of just looking at schematics and wiring things up together without really knowing how it all works. But that's where the book fails for me. The experiments aren't really set up to drill home the basics of circuit building, but instead just show some properties of each component. I find I'm learning more by just watching youtube instructional videos about basic electronics. I'd still like a book that covers this basic information but this book isn't it.I wish they had clearly marketed it at intermediate hobbiests because I think that would have been more accurate.
