How to Make Clothes That Fit and Flatter: Step-by-Step Instructions for Women

Not as Helpful as Make Your Own Dress Patterns
This book contains decent information about choosing flattering garment styles although some people may find some of it dated. The weakest part of the book is the flat pattern alterations shown which tend to be simplistic. That said there are ideas in this book which are not discussed in more recent books on this subject like how to place prints and stripes on the body and adjust the pattern to reflect this. There is also a chapter of how you build in fit as you construct a garment and the importance of careful pressing to retain the fit. This would not be my recommendation as a first book to buy to learn how to fit. As subsequent book it is worthwhile especially for those who like to sew vintage garments.

It suits me- the art of sewing....
Tired of buying and wearing clothes that do not fit well enough? Here is a little book packed with a valuable content that might solve many of your sewing and fitting problems- as well as psychological ones, I'd say. Frustration and low esteem be gone! The author speaks about measurements, types of figure, fitting, color theory, pattern adjustments, sewing techniques and more, i.e. how it all colludes so that you can create a flattering garment on your own. She looks at fashion in a deeper way- forms, harmony, shaping. I love it.Generously illustrated with line drawings which is good (no fuzzy old photographs) it shows many details i.e. how to sew on hooks, how to stitch a lapel, how to slash a corner. The book is written in the sixties so the examples of the dresses may feel slightly dated-but think Jackie Kennedy, not hippies. Rest assured it provides accurate information for those interested in the art of sewing even in this century. Long live couture! Hear: All the dresses have a good control in their darts, seems and fullness. There you go..."One princess line can fit shoulders, chest, bust, waist and hips. How can you beat that?" Yes, how can you? Well, you can't."What works is right, what doesn't is wrong."I get it. Simple enough, but not so easy. There is no one way to make a pattern change. The author offers suggestions and I feel grateful.I conclude that I didn't throw away a good deal of money on a thinly spread nonsense. It was an expensive little old book to say the least but I do not regret that I bought it while I still could. Now I need to apply myself. Will you follow suit?

The book is in excellent shape as advertised
Quick delivery. The book is in excellent shape as advertised. Thank you. The book itself is of great value for those interested in the difference between custom made and chain store clothes production, and how to make clothes that fit. Live reading it.

A good fitting book.
It's definitely a vintage book, but it contains very good information about pattern fitting and alterations.

Glad to find this!
The best on the subject and I own most of them.

Overhyped
Meh. For all the sewing collection must-have lists it's made, in my opinion it's not a game changer. Her "Make Your Own Dress Patterns" (which has been re-released, available for $12) is easier to read, has the same--if not better--information, and is decidedly more up to date. This one would be worth it only for vintage value and if found at a yard sale for $1.

Great addition to my sewing library
I love these old sewing books written in a time when everyone sewed. It's such a lost art these days that when learning this skill, we have to reach back to past times for books on the subject matter. This book is a really good one.

How to make Clothes that Fit & Flatter
This is an old-fashioned book. Written by an old-fashioned author. She writes, not holding anything back. Today's (sewing) authors will write much about one subject. The old-fashioned ones tell all they know about the entire subject. (Meaning of course, that the old-fashioned ones give you more for your dollar.)

A bit disappointing
Not at all what I was expecting, so much reading to get to what I wanted to learn and still need to go over and over and watch videos to make sense of it.
