I wasn't sure I really needed one, but I LOVE this thing!
When I saw this on sale for only $19, it didn't seem so frivolous to pick one up. I've been using my microwave oven as a timer and it's on the other side of the room, so I thought the timer alone was worth a few bucks. And it is. Here are some things I love about Alexa:* The aforementioned timer. I do wish there was an option to use different sounds for the timer, but it really does make life easier to be able to instantly ask Alexa to set a timer. I keep forgetting that I can set multiple timers and name each one. Try doing that with your microwave! If you're cooking dinner and have even one side dish to time, this is a big help.* Reminders. I have a terrible short-term memory. By the time I get to my phone or a pad of paper to write down a reminder, I've already forgotten it! If you're close enough to Alexa, as soon as you think of what you need to remember, you can tell her to remind you at a certain time or on a certain day at a certain time. The reminder will show up on your phone as well, so if you allow notifications, you'll get the notification if you're out or if you're too far away to hear her.* Shopping List. If you run out of an item, tell her to add it to your shopping list, which appears on the Alexa app on your phone. You can create a specific list for specific stores. Again - if your short-term memory isn't so great, this can be a big help.* I love her songs! Ask her to sing you a science song. Or a pirate song. They're fun and clever and she has a surprisingly good voice for an AI.* Alarms - I might get another one for my bedroom at some point, because, although I use my phone as my wake-up alarm, I'd like to have something that permanently sits in my room, just in case I forget my phone. There are many alarm sounds to choose from. There are many other things she can do and sometimes it's just fun to say hi. Be sure to say "Alexa, good morning" in the morning. And ask her what she's thankful for each day.I've only had her for a short time, but I love her. I believe she can do a lot more (I just remembered that she can tell you how far away a certain store is and/or how long it will take to get there given current traffic). Over time, I hope to take advantage of more features. For now, at the sale price of $19, she's a bargain, very useful, and she's even a fun companion. :-)
