"Flying Without a Net" Soars!
Rags to riches stories are a dime-a-dozen, but Vital's story of perseverence goes far beyond overcoming poverty. Some of what he endures is heartbreaking, and some of it is just plain creepy. (His Father's Belgian family is like the Von Trapps gone horribly wrong.) A strong-willed child might have survived, but only one with an indelible spirit like Vital's could have turned such negative circumstances into a life so positive.Although I felt the book ended rather abruptly (I would have liked to have read more about his decision to come to America, his initial forays with cirque, and the discovery of his talents as a fine artist), I suppose the fact that I wanted more is a good thing. (Maybe there will be a sequel!) Regardless, "Flying Without a Net" soars with optimism and should be read.

Vivid storytelling.....remarkable man
Circus artists are a fascinating bunch- I've been lucky to meet a number of them over the past few years. Each has a story about how he/she arrived at the bigtop. Vital's is probably the most unlikely. As you know if you've read the book synopsis or other reviews, his childhood was one of pain, poverty, and turmoil. Yet, Vital's remarkable resilience allowed him to triumph over the adversity and create a new life in a new country as a performer in the world's most elite circus. I was mesmerized by his storytelling - I just wish it hadn't ended when it did. I wanted to turn the page and continue the journey with him. Well, maybe the movie will pick up where the book leaves off! I hope so.

Germaine is his own net.....
Vital Germaine's Flying without a Net is a beautifully honest, verbally stunning memoir that describes his tough childhood and his eventual survival, and, success in working with Cirque du Soleil.Though, Germaine's journey is an arduous series of disappointments, losses, and displacements, his indomitable spirit drives him always forward, looking back only for added strength in times of doubt. This book is not an angry, bitter, selfie, but a testament to the man in the mirror who keeps faith with his dream and now smiles on his life.I'm looking forward to its sequel., Vital. Bravo!

... journey from a vulnerable boy with far less than perfect circumstances to the strength of a man who knows ...
This book takes you on a journey from a vulnerable boy with far less than perfect circumstances to the strength of a man who knows that his fate is his own. Therapeutic and mesmerizing for anyone who has endured a confused and neglected childhood and even those who haven't. The biography elicits emotions of sadness and injustice as you read the authors experiences as a young boy, but somehow manages to leave you uplifted and raring for the future. His and your own!

Amazing Story!
This is an amazing true story about a boy who overcame insurmountable odds to become a successful performer, businessman, and all-around admirable human being. I would suggest this book as a must read for anyone who has any doubts about his ability to achieve what seems like an "impossible dream," as well as anyone who enjoys a good success story.

Couldn't put it down....
There are so many young men that share the same stories as Germaine. I am very happy, moreover overjoyed at being able to read something so thought provoking and raw. This was by far the best read of the year.

A powerful, harrowing indictment of the care system, and a humbling example of the invincibility of the human spirit
An extraordinary story of courage and refusal to give in. Vital's book opens a world of indescribable suffering, loneliness, despair, and a terrifying description of human degradation. But it also opens a window into the opposite of those things; determination, generosity, love, loyalty, bravery and strength. The structure of the book is also gripping, with its almost filmic movement in time and place. The use of comments (indicated by italics) by the narrator as he reflects on his internal thoughts as the actions unfold adds to the book's immediacy and its honesty. Vital makes no effort to hide thoughts that might reflect on him critically. Integrity and truthfulness shine out from every page. The book has some rough edges, and it's by no means perfectly crafted, but any weaknesses of structure or expression pale into insignificance beside its humanity and almost unbearable poignancy. Read it and wonder how human beings can be so cruel, and so beautiful.
