This is DM's classic 3 eye shoe. The second style that Dr. Martens made, the shoe was crafted for industry — and made rebellious by generations of non-conformists. The only difference here? A narrower design for women. The classic three-eyelet 1461 shoe from Dr. Martens hits just the right low note. Continuing to improve upon the original design, it features a durable leather or suede upper, a PVC sole and heel, signature welted construction, and, of course, the famous bouncing sole. P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two founders decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history. See more

Odd construction
I just ordered and received 3 pairs of 1461s. All are leather. And all are the exact same size, which is marked on the tongue of the shoes. The two printed pairs fit like all my other 1461s. Slight point to the toe, wide through the middle, a moderate curve to the sole, and very comfortable right out of the box. This smooth black pair is constructed very differently. The toe is very round, the width is much more narrow, and the sole has a more extreme upturn of the toes - to the point of producing a rocker motion when worn and walked in. Unlike my other docs, these are pretty darned uncomfortable. I have been wearing my current black 1461s pretty much daily for 25 years. Still so comfy, but the leather is finally wearing rough (soles still perfect), so I wanted a replacement pair. This new pair is disappointing. Either they will take some patient breaking in, or I'll need to return them as incorrectly sized. Still undecided. Attached photos show the difference in width, sole curvature and toe.

Good shoes, except...
As far as sizing goes, the best thing to do would be to try on a pair of Dr. Martins in a store if possible. Several department stores, journeys, perhaps zumiez, among other stores, also sell docs and trying on is a must. There are no half sizes, so I had to debate between slightly too small and slightly too large (went with the small). As far as quality goes, I have no idea how these 1461s live up to the original English made ones as I have never owned a pair of those, but my Asian made 1460s seemed fine to me- leather softened up after a few weeks of wear and they're extremely comfortable now. Not sure if they'll last you 10+ years as the original docs seemingly did, but with proper care you can get lots of use out of any Dr. Martens, no matter where they come from. As far as these specific 1461s go, I ordered a pair and was happy with them except for one thing- the tongue was sewn in an odd manner and hurt the top of my foot, along with leaving a noticeably strange dent (right foot in photo). For this reason, I returned them. If not for this issue, however, I would have happily kept them. Very cute shoes with patterned socks.

Round up for Half-sizes; Great shoe though!
Per suggestions I ordered a size down since I am normally a half size. Unfortunately a size down was too small - since these are made with such sturdy materials there's just no wiggle room. I would suggest for folks who normally order a half size to round up rather than down for this shoe. If it was made of cotton it would be a whole different story but these are really sturdy leather that are not going to give (you might scrape off some heel skin trying to squeeze your foot into a size too small). Ultimately this is a great shoe though and as long as you get the sizing right I think you'll be pumped to wear these - they're made well and a really timeless, versatile style. I needed a good flat for work and what better than a nice Doc Martin brogue/oxford to say "I may work in corporate america but I'm still kind of anti-establishment?"

Still love Doc Martens. Great shoe.
They are exactly what I want. The other reviews made me question my size, the comfort, look. So I’m a 7 and a half to an 8. I got a size 7 hoping for it to be ok.Even had a dream about it. LolThey are perfect. They are exactly what I was wanting. The front of the shoe dose lift up a little but you can’t really tell. The shoe is leather so you know you have to break them in. Trick 1. Rubbing alcohol and coconut oil with thick socks and a hair dryer that’s gets rather hot. The other tricks are on line. Try them before you run over them with a car

Try removing insole if tight getting foot into shoe
Like others, I vacillate between deciding on an 8 or a 9 when I’m a size 8.5. The length of the 8 is perfect once you get your foot and heel situated, though the heel can be too tight, but the arch is tight and the length of a 9 is a little too long but the foot slides in easily with comfortable arch/vamp.TIP: if the above happens to you, go for the 8 and remove the insole, then see if that makes the fit perfect. Once you break in the shoe, you can add the insert sole back in. Doing this worked for me probably because the shoe is a lace up. I may try it on a pair of closed toe shoes I have that’s hard to get my foot into.

These 1461's are excellent quality - solid with sturdy leather and neat stitching
These 1461's are excellent quality - solid with sturdy leather and neat stitching. Made in Vietnam (I have another pair from Vietnam that have lasted really well and I find I have no problems breaking them in). They came from Urban Kicks and arrived quickly from UK to NZ. I bought women's Dr Martens because I have narrower than average feet. I don't remember ever having the choice before...Size wise I know I am a 7 in Docs so the size chart is slightly off for me. It says 7 UK and 9 US (that translates) but also 41 for Euro when I quite often buy 39 or 40. I've never bought bigger than 40. I've always liked the Japanese measurement because to me it's the least subjective, however, on the size chart it says 25.5 cm for a size 7 and my foot's 26 cm. Upshot...I really don't think that you can beat trying a pair on if possible. Docs themselves seem to have been consistent in size as I've worn a size 7 since the 1980's. Still love them with a passion :)

Narrow Width
The length of the shoes would have fitted me perfectly if it wasn't for the narrow width.I was born with an irregular pair of wide feet, any of the normal shoes wouldn't fit me as I expected them to be. It's a shame that the women's Docs are made narrow just like other women's shoes. I wish they would specify the width of them.By the way, they came with the inserts that were already ripped off--it shows that the construction was ill-considered compared to other Doc Martens that I brought from Thailand.

Run surprisingly small
I have mixed experiences with Dr. Martens. I wear a 6.5 and it’s recommenced to size down as the shoes run large. I have several pairs of Docs. My boots fit perfectly. I have the Quad platform oxfords and the 6 is a little big but still fit comfortably. I bought these in a 6 and they’re tight. I’m hoping they just need to be broken in as the leather is very stiff (as usual), but these are tighter than any other Docs I’ve owned before.

Sizing a puzzle
I really don't understand DM sizing. I went to a shoe shop before ordering these and tried a pair of women's size 6 that were far too small and a pair of men's size 7s that were like boats. So I ordered a women's size 7 in these. When they arrived they were enormous, possibly even bigger than the men's 7s I'd tried. I returned them and reordered a woman's size 6, these were also slightly too big.I'm giving up now, I won't order a third pair. But it seems clear that the size varies enormously from style to style, although both pairs I tried on in the shop were 3 hole flat lace ups so as similar to these as I could find.

Nice enough shoe, but didn't really last long
I wore these shoes pretty much every day from November to March. After breaking them in, which took a while, they were surprisingly comfortable. The problem is that they also seem fragile too. In the 5 months I've worn them, I've managed to wear a hole in the leather where the ball of my foot comes in contact with the sole.Maybe I bought a duff pair, and the rest are more reliable, but maybe I didn't, so these shoes fragility is something to consider when it comes to buying another pair.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE
Poor quality, not genuine Docs. Customer Service is non-existant. Refund refused as See,Dr beloved item is a close match, style was different, far from the traditional Docs I was after. The size was too small also. I could not get my foot in the shoe, despite being the same UK size as all my other Docs.

Soul detached after just two weeks!
How wrong was I to think that a Dr. Marten shoe would be good quality - even if I bought them online. After just two weeks of light usage, the soul has detached from the shoe at the arch. Of course it's just long enough that he returns policy isn't available any more :-(This experience has been dreadful and I wouldn't recommend you buy them.

Dr Martens - Black Smooth Z Welt
Having read some reviews I was a little hesitant to buy before actually trying them on for size. However my size 10s turned out to be spot on, agreed you do have more room than other shoes but certainly not excessive and worn with my thick cotton work socks they were perfect. I have worn them all week at work and I must say that they were very comfortable, with no rubbing on heals or ankles. I also think they look like a quality pair of shoes and as i purchased the Black Smooth Z Welt (ones with yellow stitching) added that authentic Dr Marten look while looking great.
