It does not seem to be charging when I plug it into the mains. Does it have to be into a computer?

When l unpacked mine l plugged it into the mains using a charger and the display remained at 78 percent. I checked the Amazon page selling it and it said you need to discharge it first (charge a device). After it went down to zero (0) and turned off l then plugged it in to charge and - although it took a while - went to 100%.

How long to charge pack? Sent with 80% trying to top up but just 0 is flashing

Same problem here. It is at 79% and does not charge up on the plug...

Is this safe to take on an airplane? Will they take it off me if kept in hand luggage?

I have just travelled on BA and few other airlines carrying this in my hand luggage without any issues. Just remember to take it out on a tray along with your mobile and laptop during security check. Being a storage battery, you cannot put it in cargo hold.

Will this work on a samsung Galaxy A90

The unit comes with two USB cables. A USB to micro USB and a USB to USB C connector. It also has a micro and a C plug fitted so it can be charged from either cable type from your Galaxy charger. Not sure what fitting the A90 has but hope this helps. As long as you can connect to your A90 with either the Micro or C connector then the unit will meet all your requirements. I have a Galaxy S7 which uses the micro connector lead and the unit works with it perfectly.
