maps and sd card
It will not take a sd card, put one in and it says no sd card, Ordered new sd cards to see it that works? The two I have would not work! I went on the Garmin web page to see how to insert the SD card and followed the directions!Took over 6 hours to download the updated US ONLY maps.At the price you have to pay (over $255.00O) you would think they could put in a couple dollar sd card for you.You would also think that they could sell a GPS with the updated maps in it.I should receive the new SD cards from amazon tomorrow and I will see it that works - if they do not I guess I will have to try to return itUPDATE:New SD card works.Still do not like to have to download 6 hours of map updates. This is my third Garmin and each one I had to update before using!EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT NOW!

Great unit for hiking, but instructions are lousy
Unit works well for back country hiking, with good accuracy, good graphics, and good battery life. Overall, I am happy with it. But it is very difficult to learn how to use, because the instructions (both written and on-line) suck. User you-tube videos are necessary to figure out how to do the many things this unit is capable of. Also, there can be significant lag-time for the screen to refresh, which is not a big deal but is a nuisance.

Marine Opinion: Must-have for emergencies and/or camping!
We used the old Etrexs that were black and white and only showed trails so when I bought this and saw how just the base maps that come installed in this were all in color and great detail I was so excited. I took it with me on a drive with a buddy and it had almost no problem keeping up driving on the highway and going through the valleys that we lost cell service in and our phone gps stopped workingAbsolutely love this little powerhouse! I got some screen protectors and a soft case for it to try to make it last as long as possible since I know these things can take a beating and last pretty much forever if taken care of correctly. Glad they still have GPS that run on AAs instead of lithium-ion batteries that degrade within a few yearsYou can download maps online for more detail on a specific region of the world!

Disappointing Garmin product
I have used Garmin products for over 30 years. This one just does not make the cut. I could not use the intructions to setup the unit. The software said it was not supported and said I needed to use the udpdater program. This program repeatedly failed to recognize the unit and complete the process. I looked for a solution on the Garmin site and nothing there helped. The user interface was not intuitive . The screen was sufficiently bright but the detais were still hard to see.Due to problems with the update interface and user interface, I decided this was not going to meet my needs. There should have been a simple solution tothe updating so I could add the maps I wanted.I can't recommend this unit.

Perfect Value for average hiker
Excellent value for the average hiker. Used when in BANFF and Galcier for hiking and once figured out the system is excellent! Takes a little time to learn the interface and process of saving trails but excellent tracking

It keeps you from getting lost and not much else.
This is a small, cheaper, hand-held gps unit. The interface feels like early flip phones. I got this unit basically to stay on trail and feel a little sense of not getting lost. It does that. It comes with preloaded maps that have worked for my hiking needs in the Sierras of CA. The screen is small and is harder to see in the shade than in light. There are several Youtube videos out there to help familiarize you with this unit which is very helpful because the instruction were so small I couldn't read them. Overall, I knew what I was getting when I ordered this unit so my expectations weren't high. If you're looking to get a small hiking gps but don't want to break the bank, this unit will work for you. All of the negative points that other reviews have brought up are valid but remember that this unit is only $280. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and have used it 3 times and it worked great. I got off trail, busted out the gps, located the trail and got back on target. Also, after 3 seperate 10 mile hikes with the unit on the whole time, the battery life is still at full bars using standard AA batteries. I recommend always bringing a backup pair of AAs just in case. It doesn't come with a belt clip or a carry case so I bought those to go with it.
