A fabulous book to introduce elementary school kids to WWII history and the story of Anne Frank. I used it as part of a homeschool curriculum and it lends itself beautiful to activities (looking up words in a dictionary, spelling lists, art projects)

Great History Lesson on a Difficult Topic
Beautifully written and illustrated. As a teacher, I have found it difficult to explain the injustices and evils of the Holocaust to young children. This book illustrates how prejudice and bullying of any group is harmful to all. The world was not a happy place. Through the eyes of a beloved chestnut tree outside the secret annex of the Franks, we learn about the injustices done to innocent people and the few who tried to help. The children have responded with many questions and thoughts about Anne Frank and her family. It has given me the opportunity to discuss so many issues that are as relevant today as they were during the Holocaust. The kids are particularly interested to learn that the saplings from the tree that was so special to the Frank girls have been or will be planted around the world as a reminder of the importance of tolerance and respect for all.

What a special and sweet story, highly recommended
What a special and sweet story, highly recommended. The illustrations are gorgeous (as are the illustrations in all of this writer's books) and the story was incredibly touching. My little guy is not old enough to appreciate the lesson but he loves looking at the beautiful photos. I look forward to reading him this one once he's old enough to understand and appreciate the lessons as well.

Great book, excellent teaching tool for parents.
Beautiful story, perfectly told for little readers. This is not an easy topic to talk about with children and this book is a perfect way to explain the most terrible history lesson. As a Jewish mom, and the daughter of a survivor myself- I'm happy to have another tool to teach my kids... Never forget what happened.
