Works great.
It does make a low noise but it's not an annoying noise. I would recommend.

Targus AWE81US Chill Hub and Chill Mat with 4-port Hub for Laptops
This chill mat is powered by connecting to a USB port on your computer, but has 4 USB ports on the unit, so that is not a problem. I have read some were not happy because there was no ON-OFF switch? I find this more of a convenience, you don't have to remember to turn the unit on. When you turn the computer on the fans are working, even in sleep mode keeping your CPU cool and that's what I purchased this for. When you shutdown the fans turn off. When I first got this product you couldn't tell if it was even on, very quiet. I have been using it for 2 months now. There is a slight rattle every now and then when it starts up which goes away shortly. I can live with that but it is a concern and why I have given it 4 stars.

Great Buy
Great cooler for a 17-inch laptop. Works well and quietly. Will definitely recommend to others.

Words but could be better
I use this with a Dell XPS 12 laptop, which is a 12 inch laptop. Anything up to a 17 inch laptop would fit but would actually be larger than the mat. I like its ability to elevate and it stay in the elevation position for the most parts. The USB hub is also great; however, if your laptop USB port doesn't put out a lot of power, then you won't be able to power higher power consumption devices. Meaning, you will not be able to power a portable hard drive or a portable DVD player at the same time. A bunch of thumb drives are no problem. Also, the 2 fans on the mat also run off of your laptop power. There is an upside. The USB hub does take a power adapter to supply that extra power. The downside is the fans. The first few months I had no problems but then they started making loud noises upon start up. I remedy this by tapping on the mat and they eventually stop making the noise. However, I'm finding it takes longer to quite them down. So, it's probably a matter of time before they die. I think they can be replaced but would be a pain doing so. But in the end, it keeps my laptop cool, elevated and options for multiple USB devices as long as I have enough power. Edit: Fans make a horrible sound now. Can't stop the noise nor can you access them to change them out. Fans didn't even last a month. Money down the drain.

Great concept, good design, poor build
I am a full time college student and father of three. I use my laptop for school purposes as well as graphic design and some rendering. When multitasking my laptop gets hot as most do. I have used Targus cooling mats in the past and had no real qualms and come to expect high quality in the Targus name. The mat has an adjustable deck which is nice and allows you to set up the laptop at the angle and height you need. The downside is the clips that hold the deck up do not secure very well when put in the lock position. Twice I have been working on my laptop when the clips have let loose and caused my laptop to come crashing down. The dual fans are nice and they help cool the laptop however they do not push much air and the positioning doesn't really line up with the vent ports on my 17" HP Laptop. The fan also has begun letting out a horrendous roar when starting up the computer and now it does it when I start up and when it feels like it. I have inspected the elements and found no cause for this occurrence. This mat is more suited for smaller laptops my laptop actually hangs over three of the four sides and if your laptop is not perfectly balanced it will slide down the mat if it is in an elevated position. Perhaps a anti slip coating would help? I truly hope this is helpful. It is upsetting that the issues began shortly after the return exchange period

A little overpriced and has some design/accessory issues
Item was about as described, but running solely on the USB power, the fans aren't quite as powerful as advertised. The quiet fans don't really put out that much cooling power. If you have an overheated laptop, you don't want someone to blow on it, you want a blizzard fan to get it cooler much more quickly. The item SHOULD come with the optional AC adapter (sold separately, of course, for more than half the price of the cooler pad alone) to provide the appropriate amount of power necessary to really keep a PC chilled. In addition, the USB cord (USB to mini-USB, to plug from the PC USB port to connect to the pad for power and activate the USB hub) is on the short side. My working USB port is on the left side, and the mini-USB connection on the pad is on the rear right. It wouldn't be so bad if the cord were maybe 2-3 inches longer - then it wouldn't feel stretched to its limit. Last issue is with the features which hold your laptop on the pad. My laptop has a curved front edge, and the lip on the front of the pad barely holds the laptop in place. The rubber pads on the back of the pad don't really grip that well, and my laptop too easily slips around, making for an unstable working surface. I will say that I love that this has the 4-port USB hub. I need the cooling pad to keep my laptop cooled, but only one of my 3 USB ports on the laptop are functional. My headphone jack went out, so I'm using a USB Sound Card adapter which occupies the single working port. With the additional hub on this product, I was able to expand and use BOTH the cooling pad via USB along with the USB sound adapter card and not have to purchase a separate hub to allow for it.

Using it everyday and it keeps working. Don't find it to loud and the usb hub works great to. Wouldn't travel to much with it, But the laptop doesn't slide on it so that's good. The height adjusters work great and stay in place. Overall pretty happy with it
