The Last Detail: A Novel

A Book Any Sailor Will Love!
I saw the movie years ago and didn't realize it was based on a book until I picked up "Last Flag Flying," and I wanted to read "The Last Detail," first. Both books are incredible - I love his dialogue! I laughed out loud during a lot of the book. Anyone who just watches the movies is missing so much. Brilliant. I'm looking for more books by this author now.

Good Book
The book is always better than the movie.. I find to be true for this story as well. I canโt wait to read LAST FLAG

Another good read
Read the book after seeing the film. Owned the book more than 10 years ago, glad to own it again, but I think I prefer the film

Has Held Up Well Over the Years
I hadn't read this book in about 30 years, and picked it up to re-read prior to reading the sequel LAST FLAG FLYING. I was quite surprised at how much more I got out of Poniscan's work, now that I am retired military. His charaters are flawless, dialogue is elegant and bawdy, and the plot moves at a frantic pace. The point I came away with was this: sooner or later, all of us lifers became disappointed in the system.A great book!

Worthwhile read.
I was in the navy during the time period that this novel took place. Brought back some vivid memories.

A tale set in an earlier time, but true today.
I read this book thirty years ago and loved it. The story is slightly dated, but the emotions remain true, and the the book has worn well, unlike many others of its time. I reccomend it highly. You may have difficulty locating a copy, but it is well worth the effort. Otherwise you'll have to settle for the movie on late night TV.

Offbeat and true
A great read and companion to the film. Do yourself a favor and give both a chance. Can't wait to read the sequel

Four Stars
One of my favorite books, still relevant to what the navy is today.
