English & Grammar, Grade 5 (Brighter Child Workbooks) Paperback – May 1, 2006

We homeschool and are getting a lot of the grammar through reading, copywork and writing exercises, but I also wanted to make sure my kids formally covered grammar in this format to help prepare for the STAR test (which we take through our affiliation with a public charter school). I feel like they are getting what they need and so do they! I should also mention that I homeschool 3 different children at different grade levels and this book is very open-and-go, saving us all time. I have my kids read the instructions, look at the examples and complete the exercises. I have them do it in pencil and then I have them ask me any questions as they are working. Once I correct, they can go back through and revise whatever they missed since they wrote in pencil. So far, so good!

As a homeschooler, I have tried many publishers, and I really enjoy this one. Finally, a workbook that is not repetitive and the instructions are understandable, and the workbook can stand alone without additional instruction (within a normal language arts program). It is certainly great for extra study for schoolers, but as a homeschooler, this is not our only language arts workbook, but we are already planning to order the 6th grade one. It is great that we can "look inside" these workbooks, which prevents many returns.

Not enough practice, or examples to help a child struggling with grammar. I would consider something else, if you need more than just a basic review or refresher.

The explanations of the parts of speech and punctuation are good and easy to understand. I particularly like the fact that they have put in exercises on the correct use of words such as "lie' and "lay", "accept" and "except", etc. They also address similes, metaphors, and idioms. I gave a four star rating because they only have one page of exercises for each topic; sometimes (frequently) more practice is needed.

Best curriculum I have ever found!!! The price is amazing compared to all other curriculum. The answer key has a duplicate of the page so you can follow along as your child answers the questions, instead of having the child repeat every question being asked. Each page has a very detailed explanation with examples. When the children look forward to their lessons everyday you know you are using a great curriculum. If there was more stars to give, I would.

This is a really good book to work on cursive writing for a beginner. I bought this book for my son who has to write in cursive in the next school year which is only three months away. This will really help him out during the summer break.

I would recommend this book to be added to a child's library at home if it is not a book required for use in school. The book was received in excellent condition and the order was processed in limited waiting time.

I used this as a summer review, preview, pre-teach for my kids entering fifth grade. Directions are decently clear with examples. Of course, a little teaching or reminding is helpful for success. Overall, I'm glad I bought this so that they don't forget their grammar over the summer. If I were looking at this as a teacher, I would probably want more practice sheets.
