Strong Start!
Fried my old starter + solenoid, so I ordered this puppy and she WORKS. Granted, I haven't replaced the starter before on my '72 Super Beetle daily driver (and have owned it for 2.5yrs now), but I have never experienced such a strong start on my car before. Can't speak for the longevity as I've only just installed it a couple weeks ago, but my hopes are high! I think some reviews mentioned some installation difficulties, but I didn't have to do anything different than installing an OE starter, besides holding onto the halfmoon bolt with some pliers while tightening the nut behind the fan shroud.

Not an exact replacement but workable
I've been driving, rebuilding and repairing air cooled VW's since the 80's, so this is not uncharted territory for me. Here's my overall impression of this starter. I'll update it after a few months of using the starter to further inform you of any quirks.THE GOODIt's smaller and lighter than the original starter, so installing it is a little easier. It's inexpensive and readily available. The 3 year extended warranty is let's than $10. Cheap insurance! It comes with a new bushing to install into the transmission bell housing. You should absolutely replace the bushing to insure the best performance and durability off your new starter.THE BADIt's smaller and lighter than the original Bosch unit so my assumption is that it's not going to last nearly as long. I'll be happy if I get 5 years out of it.It's not an exact replacement. If you have a starter that has 3 spade connectors and all three of them are used, then this starter won't work for without some custom jiggery. The factory D bolt used for the upper bolt doesn't lock down due to the starter being smaller. You'll have to replace it with a standard bolt, or wedge a screwdriver (or something) under the bolt to prevent it from spinning during installation. Not a game changer, just an inconvenience.NOTES:My original starter had the 3 spade connectors, but only the two that are connected at the same place are used. Even though this starter has only 1 lug, I used a spade doubler so that both wires can connect. They're a few bucks at the auto parts store, or about 7 bucks for a 25-pack on Amazon. It's not rocket science. Considering the difference in build-quality of the original vs the replacement, I'm going to rebuild my original unit and hang onto it as a spare. New bushings and brushes and a little lube and it'll be good for another 50 years.

Good starter
This is a good hi torque starter. My beetle starts much quicker and easier. The only problem was the D bolt but I put a visegrip on it.
