The subtitle for this book is "A complete system for understanding the fretboard".This book is focused on understanding the fretboard and excels at making the reader understand getting intimate with the fretboard.I like that this book doesn't pretend to be anything it is not; no promises of cool licks, hot riffs, blazing shredding etc.The book deals with THEORY and does a pretty good job of explaining it well. Like all good instructional treatises, this isn't a book you read in a day or even week or even a month. You use it, bit by bit, come back to old bits again, read new material, go back to old material etc.It's a book you keep handy on your bookshelf, a ready friend when you need one.It's a bit dry, though, be warned. It's not a dummy's guide and doesn't treat you like an idiot. It'll teach you all you need to know how to play lead and rhythm without actually teaching you and licks or riffs. How about that?Overall, it's a good book that I'll be happy to recommend to anyone who wants to understand the guitar fretboard.

I've not yet this book for a year yet and it's literally reinventing me as a guitar player. I don't get nearly the time I'd like to practice/play so I need to make the most of it. I was initially self-taught and then did a private lessons for a few years prior to quitting due to health reasons. A few decades later the itch came back with a furry and I was determined not to squander it. I bought this book based on recommendations and am so glad I found it.The approach of this book assumes you're coming from nothing but motivation and the end looks darn scary to the likes of me, but I've seen nothing but steady forward progress that builds incrementally so that no step forward is too high to reach. The author has done an impeccable job of breaking down a complex subject and made it possible for anyone to learn. Some (most?) of music theory is so old that it often seems arcane and unnecessarily complex (or even wrong from a mathematical PoV). Yet it works and has stood the test of time... a LOT of time, so why fight it? I'm glad to finally be on the road that eliminates all the mystery. I can't imagine a learning approach any more straightforward that what's presented here. It's easy to understand and to skip parts that you might already know.

This is a very thorough book and with some of the best explanations and exercises I have encountered. The guitar itself requires time and effort to play it well. A student needs to know the laytout of the instrument, where the notes are and how they relate to each other. Then they can make sense of their warm-up exercises and scales. Soon chords and melody are not as daunting as they were when the student didn’t know where to go on the fretboard. The fretboard is a lot harder to understand than the piano, for example! I appreciate the 5-pattern approach to explanation over the CAGED method. Too many teachers start students with a song or a chord by saying put your index finger on the second string at the first fret, etc., instead of teaching the notes right away so he/she can say, “put your finger on C on the second string...or on the 5th string, or the 1st string, or 6th string, or the 3rd string...”. Get my drift? The Guitar Fretboard Workbook is not teaching technique but it will accelerate playing progress through thorough understanding of the guitar. Bravo for a book well structured!

OMG I am currently on Chapter 7, and cannot help writing a good review on this book already. After so many guitar classes and $$ wasted and still don't have a complete understanding of the fretboard, this book really helps me understand all the bits of guitar fretboard theory in a systematic way. I am so thankful for the author to write up this book, it has helped me so much and I truly enjoy the `WOAH` moment in every single chapter, it's enlighning and now I have a much clearer goal what I should be working on to improve my understanding on all the notes on the fretboard.

Nowadays there are so many choices in guitar education books with new ones coming out all the time!The Guitar Fretboard Workbook by Barrett Tagliarino is one of those must haves. There are no short cuts if you really want to learn guitar well, but you also don't have to get bogged down with loads of theory.I taught guitar for a decade and own loads of books, I picked this one up near the end of my teaching days as a "hole filler" and man did I suddenly realise I had a lot of holes.This book will build a very strong foundation so you can actually understand what you are playing. So many musicians can play great songs and solos note for note but have no idea what's going on. Without this knowledge you will take away so much less from all the time you have put into learning these songs.Buy this book, really take your time with each section, learning the guitar is just one long journey anyway so enjoy it!

I almost never leave reviews, but I absolutely have to take some time to write one up for this book. I have been playing guitar for several years now, but I never really understood what I was doing. I would just play songs by reading tabs and memorization. This is the first book that I have ever picked up that actually broke theory down to a level that I could easily comprehend. I am about halfway through right now, and I am totally blown away at what I see when I look at a fret-board now. I feel like that dude in the matrix that watches the computer code, but actually sees the girl in a red dress. I would truthfully pay hundreds of dollars for the comprehension that this book has already given me. I would give it six stars if Amazon would make that an option. There are no riffs or licks here. No finger workouts. This is not a book about technique. Not designed to build chops, only comprehension. But seriously... If you are struggling with understanding the fret-board and music theory in general (as it applies to the guitar), BUY THIS BOOK!!!

As a guitarist of many years’ experience, I found it helpful just to dip into those aspects of knowledge covered in the Guitar Fretboard Workbook, which I had tended to ignore in the past and to set out to improve my understanding of them. Within a short period of time I have already achieved satisfying results.The chances are that those beginning to learn the guitar who progress through this Workbook, one step at a time, alongside their existing practice routines will learn far faster than I ever did and with a more thorough understanding.Consequently, I would recommend this Workbook and its approach, as a supporting strategy to practical hands-on guitar-playing experiences, to beginners, intermediate and more advanced players, who wish to improve their understanding of the fretboard and related issues.

I love this book. Guitar theory for the beginner can seem overwhelming, I feel I have been making slow and steady progress with it however from using multiple sources. This book however is massively different simply because your not just staring and diagrams mashing your brain to bits. The simple fact it explains the exercise then you work through the book filling it in yourself really makes a huge difference. The point is this book will work depending on how you like to learn everyone is different and will learn from different stimuli, but I'm not a brilliant visual learner so reading normally isn't my best learning trait with this book however I can read, work it out by physically drawing or writing, then as if by magic the information is imbedded on my mind when I pick up the guitar itself. The break down is logical and in my eyes perfect for learners such as myself.

This is an excellent book for any one who wants to learn the theory of guitar. It enables you to go at your own pace and pick the book up or down at any time you want. I have been a guitarist for just over 4 years and I know a bit on theory anyway but wanted this book to polish up and make my knowledge bullet proof. It is certainly doing that so far. It enables you to understand what you are playing and why.I spent a lot of time in the begging or the book drilling and grinding the basics into my head and fingers, as a result it is paying off enormously as my soloing has improved ten fold. I now knot what notes to hit specificly to achieve the mood or affect I want. Saying the exercises out loud and doing them in pencil to go over them again and again really does help as silly as it sounds.I haven't yet completed the book but so far every page is offering me that little bit more. Highly recommend to any one that loves guitar.

This book is transformative for harmonic awareness. By the end you will feel really at one with the neck, no stone unturned.If I could make it a legal requirement for all beginner guitarists to complete this book I would. A solid foundation to build from.
