Texas history that the US Government just would rather you forget.
Colorful Sam Houston! This is a children's book but is written so well that adults will find it and the history within it to be a great read. Not many people live a lifetime that shapes a Nation, then a State, then briefly a Nation again. Yes, Sam owned Slaves. It is a part of American and Texas history so Get Over It. This book doesn't embellish, it just tells the story of a great man and how he affected the destiny of millions to follow.

Magnificent Sam is a very well-written and thorough account of Sam Houston, the father of Texas, and Texas history for children. The illustrations are beautifully done and captivate the attention and eyes of young and old alike. The story of Texas is told from the perspective of a distant relative of Sam's. Many neat details are included in the biography such as items that Sam enjoyed wearing, an Indian name that Sam had, the names of Sam's home, and unique details that paint the character and personality of Sam Houston. This is a must read for everyone interested in Texas History. Every Texan should have this book in their library.

Excellent Middle School Resource.
This is a wonderful book written for school age children, but it is so well done that anyone with an interest in Texas history will enjoy it. Like any adult, it was good for me to brush up on my Texas history.... been a looooong while since I had Texas History 101 back at Del Mar Jr. College in Corpus Christi, Texas in the late 70's. This book does a great job of showing the larger than life qualities of one of Texas's best statesman. It is a riveting reminder that it took a great man to do great things... like establish Texas as a republic and then later a state. School teachers that have to teach Texas history, or those from out of state that just need a good story of a most impressive and influential man will find this a most helpful resource.. and students will definitely like it. This would also make an excellent bedtime reader for young kids... though maybe a bit too long to read all the way through in one setting... or maybe not. The illustrations of the book are very good and will hold any kids attention to the heart of the narration. I recommend this book without reservations... get it... and be inspired to do great things for your state like our Sam Houston did for Texas.
