Yes quite easily. I use mine also for a super telephoto camera that weighs 3 pounds and often have it pointed up.

Is this one suit for Leica M series?

This tripod is designed for use with the DISTO and Lino series tools. However, we use this tripod for our camera. As long as your camera has typical camera tripod threads on the bottom, it'll certainly work.

Does the tri-pod have any way to attach anything to the center shaft for centering purposes?

No. Having just looked at mine the center pole is hollow aluminum, but something could be made to serve that purpose.
