Wonderful reproductions and interesting text.
What more can you ask? Of course, this is a book...with a spine in the center. This means that you will have full spread reproductions that are not easily or fully viewable into the binding. Some folks seem to think that somehow this limitation is a flaw. Well, if you have an answer on how they could have avoided the problem, by all means please share! For me, I don't see how they could have done better in this smaller sized book. Great job, and thanks for the wonderful job both textually and in the plates. Just gorgeous.

First of all, my all time favorite paintings by Bruegel have to be The Tower of Babel, The Fall of the Rebel Angels and of course The Hunters in the Snow. Had he painted only these three masterpieces he would have still belonged to the realm of the greatest. Beside his figures, what really makes him special is the landscapes. Again, had he painted only landscapes, he would have still been one of the greatest. He manages to capture such vast spaces, whole towns, villages and mountains that stretch far into the invisible, as far as the eye can see. But that is only the beginning. We are actually dealing here with something extraordinary. After experiencing the immediate beauty of the backdrop comes the initiation into the hidden meanings of his figures and their actions. The way the writer reveals the hidden messages of the paintings is mind boggling. These messages initiate the spirit into the mysteries of faith and religion. Bruegel turns our to be quite symbolic. Most of his paintings seem to be secular because his figures are usually peasants engaged in everyday life. But that is only the surface. The author actually deciphers Biblical messages in these scenes so the painting turns out to be both, sacred and secular.I've never read a similar book, not even close. If you purchase it, don't just look at the paintings. I strongly advise you to also read the accompanying text. Then you will realize that Bruegel was not only an awesome artist but also an excellent preacher. Five stars, by all means.
