Do these oil pastels have a smell?

Yes, all oil pastels have smell. It will depend on how sensitive you are, I'm very sensitive but the smell is not a problem as long as you use them with some ventilation or in a room with open door. The smell might be a problem if you use them in a very small room with door closed and no ventilation.

Is it worth the extra $$ to get the 72 color set vs the Mungyo 48 color set? (3x cost for 50% more product)

It’s wort it! You get more color and a great case to keep the oil pastels in. Mungyo is a great product and I love using them.
