no not oil,but your hands do get a bit black when handling them,however these are a quality product,better than scr####x in my opinion as ive had both

Can you shorten these

Why would you want to? Just knock them further into the ground. The top end is shaped and the bottom end tapered so cutting at either end would ruin the effectiveness.

Will these stand in base supports?

These fencing pins are untreated mild steel 8mm thick, they are designed for pushing or hammering directly into the soil, sand etc on a temporary basis, the base support would need to be so small as to render them unnessesary.
