Can this figure stand up without a stand? I noticed the feet were a little small, and wanted to be sure it could remain upright without a stand.

It does NOT stand up well at all without a stand. This was a huge "miss" by NECA. The figure is fantastic looking, but I had to order stands for 18" figures off of eBay. NECA doesn't even offer stands as an accessory. Again, their 18" figures are fantastic, but they do not stand up well without a stand.

My son unpacked this figure, which he bought with his own saved-up money, and when he tried to pose it the balljoint of the leg broke. Anyone else?

Unfortunately the reality of ordering figures online is a hit or miss. Sometimes the conditions these types of items are packaged in might alter the durability of the figure, i.e heat, cold, tossed around like a volleyball (i hope not), or they could be faulty from the start, however it wasn't the case with mine but that's happened to other figures I've bought. The number one thing to try to be sure of is to be extra careful when posing these guys, don't force anything. The warm water trick mentioned in the earlier answer may work, i've read that a blow dryer on a low setting works as well.
