Does this work with Mac OS

It actually will work just fine.. It needs to be configured on a pc.. and then it functions just fine. The public partition will open immediately .. and then you just place your thumb on the drive.. wait a few seconds.. then the secure partition will open. I put a test file on each partition and they both opened properly. 10/2/20 . Perhaps an earlier version did not. I also used it with the Apple ( not a knockoff) Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter. and accessed it with the "Files" app.

Does the drive timeout and required print again after idle period while inserted in pc?

Yes: per the manual FAQ: "The secure partition is designed to close after 15 minutes of inactivity for security purposes. To re-access the secure partition, simply place an authorized fingerprint on the sensor and it will re-open."

Is the data encrypted?

Per the manual FAQ: "Encryption is based on the 256-bit AES method." And under 'Features' on the vendor website is stated, "Securely protects files using 256-bit AES encryption."

If i initially set the fingerprint using a windows device, can i then insert this into a chromebook and it would recognize the fingerprint?

I cannot say for certain as I don't have a chromebook, but the fingerprints are stored on the device and the windows software is only used to register/manage the fingerprints. The drive light flashes rapidly when the secure partition is not unlocked and goes off after an approved fingerprint is detected. I tried plugging into a USB wall charger, the drive flashed the same as it would when inserted in a PC, then I pressed my finger and it stopped flashing as if the fingerprint was accepted.
