Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee: Smooth, Ethical, and the Best Instant Brew Around
Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee (3.53 oz Jar): Smooth, Rich, and a Game-Changer for Instant CoffeeI recently tried the Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee (3.53 oz jar, medium roast) for my morning brew and camping trips, and it’s hands-down the best instant coffee I’ve ever tasted. Sourced from organic, Fairtrade Arabica beans grown in the highlands of Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, this coffee delivers a premium experience that rivals freshly brewed coffee, all with the convenience of instant preparation.Ease of Use: 5/5Preparing a cup is effortless. I used 1–2 teaspoons per 8-ounce cup, added hot water, and stirred—it dissolves instantly with no grainy residue, unlike cheaper instant brands. It also mixes beautifully in cold water or milk for iced coffee, which was a pleasant surprise for quick summer drinks. The 3.53 oz jar yields about 50 cups, and the recyclable glass packaging is compact, making it ideal for travel or small kitchens. A Reddit user noted, “It’s perfect for camping—just pour into boiled water and stir,” and I found it a lifesaver on a recent backpacking trip.Flavor and Aroma: 4.5/5The flavor is rich, smooth, and full-bodied, with a mild bitterness and subtle notes of blackberry, as Wirecutter tasters described. It’s not as nuanced as a pour-over, but for instant coffee, it’s remarkably close to diner-quality brew. The freeze-drying process retains the Arabica beans’ natural aromas, giving it a fresh, roasted scent that’s far from the typical “instant” taste. One Amazon reviewer called it “divine,” and I agree—it’s smooth enough to drink black, though I enjoy it with a splash of oat milk. My only minor critique is that using the recommended 1 teaspoon can taste weak for stronger coffee lovers; I prefer a heaping teaspoon or two for a bolder kick, as a Reddit user also found.Quality and Sustainability: 5/5Mount Hagen’s commitment to organic, Fairtrade practices shines through. The coffee is made from 100% USDA Organic Arabica beans, free of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial additives, sourced from small-scale farmers in Papua New Guinea. The Fairtrade certification ensures fair wages and sustainable farming, which aligns with my values, as one Amazon reviewer noted: “I’d rather pay for this than Nestle.” The coffee is gentle on sensitive stomachs, with no issues for me, unlike brewed coffee, which a user with stomach sensitivities also praised. The eco-friendly glass jar and resealable pouches (available in other formats) add to its sustainability appeal.Versatility: 4.5/5This coffee is incredibly versatile—perfect for home, office, camping, or travel. I’ve used it for hot coffee, iced lattes, and even sprinkled it into recipes for a coffee crunch, as Vitacost suggests. The single-serve sticks (sold separately) are great for on-the-go, though I stuck with the jar for home use. It’s ideal for campers or students, as noted by Vitacost, and its mild flavor suits a range of preferences. The only limitation is that dark roast lovers might find the medium roast too mild, but a decaf option is available for those avoiding caffeine.Value for Money: 4.5/5Priced around $10–$12 for a 3.53 oz jar (roughly 28¢ per serving), Mount Hagen is pricier than Folgers but far cheaper than Starbucks Via, offering better flavor and ethics. With a 4.7-star average on Amazon, reviewers call it “the best instant coffee” for its taste and value. A Reddit user pointed out it’s more cost-effective than local roaster beans, yielding twice as many cups per dollar. The only downside is availability—harder to find at big chains like Kroger, but Whole Foods and Amazon stock it reliably.Final Verdict: Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee is a standout for its rich, smooth flavor, eco-friendly ethos, and unmatched convenience. Whether you’re at home, camping, or traveling, it delivers a near-fresh-brewed experience without the hassle of equipment. The mild medium roast may not satisfy dark roast fans, and stronger brews require extra granules, but these are minor drawbacks. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a premium instant coffee that’s kind to both your taste buds and the planet.

Great, quick iced coffee
This coffee makes me never want to brew a pot again. I was making a pot of pour over that I would use for iced coffee for 3-4 days, but since I found these lovely crystals, I just add them to a mason jar with ice and oat milk, screw a lid on it, shake, and take it to work with me. So simple! It mixes well and tastes great. I’ve only used it for iced coffee, so I can’t vouch for it hot, but I just bought a second jar. Saves me valuable time each week!

Best Instant Coffee!
I love this coffee! There is absolutely no bitterness and make it as a quick substitute for iced cold brew when I don't have time to get the coffee house stuff!

IF you use freeze dried coffee, this product has good flavor and is eco-friendly
We have been getting Mount Hagen 3.53oz Organic Freeze-Dried Instant Coffee for years. For an instant coffee, it has good flavor and is so easy to use. Since it is made of Arabica it is more Eco-friendly than many Coffees. this Organic Medium Roast has a good flavor. The reason I gave a 4 start review rather than a star is only because of the price. I understand that today's situation makes all companies raise their prices, but $70 seems pretty high to me and it seems their pricing has gone consistently us over the years. Other than that, this coffee is good and if you need a fast cup, this will do.

Nice Mild Flavor, Dissolves Perfectly
This instant coffee dissolves great in my morning smoothie, no need to dissolve in hot water, it dissolves perfectly fine in cold water. Very nice taste, on the mild side, decent caffeine kick but nothing crazy. Love the fact that it's organic.

Good enough as instant coffee and much better than other instant coffee.

Excellent coffee
I love this coffee. I wish it wasn't so expensive. But, hey... it is certified "Organic" and "Fairtrade", which, I assume means that it's chemical-free and that the workers growing, picking, packing, and shipping the beans aren't getting screwed over. I do like this coffee. During summer months, it's great over ice. I also found it at Fresh Thyme and compared it to all of the other coffees on the shelf. Per ounce, this was the most expensive they sold and was $1 more per jar than they cost on Amazon. I ended up getting decaf there and got a 6-pack from Amazon to give away as stocking stuffers at Christmas. Our (adult) daughter said it tastes like "diner coffee", which isn't a bad thing. Caffeine-wise, it packs such a punch.

Delicious coffee! No bitterness!
I was only slightly impressed after drinking Mount Hagen for the first couple of times. After figuring out my perfect ratio of coffee to water, I now love this coffee! After having COVID a couple of years ago, coffee tasted so bitter that I had to give it up. Mount Hagen instant coffee has given me back the joy of drinking black coffee again! No bitterness! Just delicious coffee even black like I drink coffee.
