This will aerate grassy areas in terms of poking holes in the ground, but it will not be the right tool to tear through the grass and weeds and toss/cultivate the surface material. You will need a gas/electric cultivator for that.

One tine would not fit into the holder as there is a round protrusion prevents it from going into the holder. Please advise?

Not sure from your description, but could be blemish from production process. If the tyne doesn’t fit in any of the receivers, I suggest filing down the blemish to conform with the shape of the other two or contacting seller for replacement tyne. My cultivator had no such protrusion.
