Q: Are there guidelines as to what size you want for different jobs?

I don't know about any guides for these. I bought 2 sizes large and medium. I ended up buying more of the large size. I think it is best to have the two sizes. A lot depends on what you are trying to clamp with them, I think they are great. I can use them as a regular clamp without using the rubber band as well. They have been very useful.

Q: What thickness of wood will this accommodate

This is a medium clamp. It's fits perfectly on a 2x4 so 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches. I use this clamp to glue sheet materials together.

Q: Has anyone used these for face frame for cabinets? does it hold?

I'm a cabinet maker and these do not have enough hold power to hold a face frame in place nor enough stretch to reach around even a 1 1/4" stile or rail ! Sorry but regular bar clamps are still going to be your best option for clamping face frames unless your using screws with plugs !
