Do these also protect the basis of your feet when dancing barefoot?

They completely wrap around the ball of the foot to about the arch of your foot. The only part of the foot that is exposed is the toes and the heel (as pictured) I would say they provide good protection when dancing.

I am a size 10 which size should I get?

I am 9.5 narrow with skinny calves. I first order a medium. The mediums rubbed against my calves, but they still works. Then I ordered a small, no more rubbing.

My girlfriend wears a 6.5 - 7 but has wide feet which size would work for her?

Probably a Medium...they have some stretch so she might even be ok with a small. I wear a 9 and I got a Large.
