They are just red marks, not molded or engraved scars. Since there are currently at least 3 different sizes for the Mattel T-Rex toys, and if you want one without scars by chance, order the Legacy T-Rex, which is the plain version and same size as this one. If you want a T-Rex with 'true' scars, you may need to wait as far as I know. Otherwise, the red paint marks are not that badly done.

My grandson will be 9 years old next month. Is this an appropriate gift for that age. He loves Jurassic items.

I bought this for my 3 year old grandson who asked specifically for it. His 6 year old brother was not interested. I think 9 may be too old and may need something more interactive. However, all kids are different.

Where do I order the mini set of dinosaurs that go with this product?

I have this set for the boys and they love it. I have only tried Amazon. Maybe if you do an internet search it might come up. Good luck.
