Nice book.?

Bought this to help me start longarming. I create mostly modern quilts, and the examples in this book are well suited to that style of quilts.

I've got Angela's two books in this series, Shape by Shape. (Only difference in the Cover is "collection two" layout is very similar to the first book, don't get confused on that! ). For those looking for a how to book these two books do that with great diagrams showing direction of stitching,traveling and variations. For example, she shows pebbles on p 92,(start with a circle in one direction, then stitch in the opposite direction for the next circle... Shown in a diagram with arrows and tips like" traveling in the opposite direction helps them stick together") and variations like on p. 100 echo pebbles, with a tip like "add a defined look...by going around the first inner circle a few times before echoing..." then she throws in some pebbles without any echo in-between those echoed pebbles, a variation that's a combination. She also clearly shows traveling which is a repeated stitch over to get into position for the next step. I found by repeating over the pebble on any of my non-circular pebbles that I finally was able to execute the pebble better and then my next pebbles came out circular the first time! So her tips are very useful in learning a new stitch pattern. I also found her overall book structure of stitching in shapes very helpful in figuring out which stitch to use in what area of my quilting. I tried out some of her diamond (3&5) stitching, on a diamond "kite" shape (not as symmetrical as the diamond shape) for example and ended up with my own variation on it! She also has online videos that really helped me understand to slow the speed way down at first. While it says 70 + designs for marketing, not really all those are original but with the variations the reader can see how small changes make it look totally new! Very well written and an easy to use guide! Love it! Thanks Angela!

Angela's books are simply the best. I have bought several other authors of machine quilting. Besides the books that I have purchased, I am a self taught machine quilter. The biggest difference is that she actually shows - with arrows - what direction to go next. Most other authors draw out a design and move on. Well I can scribble and doodle as well as the next guy but I want to see how to incorporate different designs into different areas and how to continue on with a continuous pattern. I like to go edge to edge and I like to quilt in each block and Angela's ideas help me to get there. Lots of great photos as well. I am now at the point where I use her books as guidance and go on with my own designs. But in the beginning, I used her designs exclusively. Really helped build up my confidence and skills. I own three of her books and they have been very much worth the investment.

Great book for any level of quilter! This is my third book by Angela Walters and I love them all! Since my quilting room and library are totally full of books, I have ordered this one and the first SHAPE BY SHAPE book in Kindle format. Cheaper and easier to lay on the quilting table for a guide.Angela's common sense , completely unpretentious language and advice all appeal to me. She simplifies what others have difficulty explaining and can express her ideas so well that even beginning free motion quilters (I was one before her first book) can follow. For those quilters of any level who have difficulty in planning how to actually quilt the quilt, her books are invaluable. This one does not disappoint as it expands on the possibilities. I have used several of her suggestions in quilts and been very pleased. She makes everything look so easy and so it is with a little practice. Attached is an example of straight out of the book quilting (back side).

I like the collection one better. i am a beginner and book one fits the shapes i usually use. However, Angela is a grat teacher and makes everything look easy.

I am developing my free motion quilting skills and this helps. Am I an FMQ magician like Angela Walters?Walter's? No. But seeing how she does things really helps. What I think is important to remember is that brain to eye to hand skills need to be developed. While with some things - like math for example - just knowing how it's done makes it easy to do. But FMQ is not math and hand-to-quilt coordination takes a long time to develop. Angela has been doing this for over 15 years.

Love anything Angela Walters produces. The key to her input is always practice, practice, and practice. Do I sound like your piano teacher or your band director? That is because if you want to be good at anything you need to put forth the effort to practice. Once you get the basics, you can be as creative as your imagination will allow. There are no boundaries. There are borders to be quilted but, the do not need to be confining.Thank you Angela for giving us the confidence to know, it is OK to not be perfect. Completing a project and being proud of it is a step towards better and more rewarding projects.

A friend has this book and I wanted my own copy . Very useful .

great book , I have been doing this on my tablet drawing my designs in graph paper on my tablet. it helps my to get the designs in my memory bank and helps when I do my test blocks free motions before I actually attempt on the actual piece.Especially on new designs that I have not ventured/ learned .
