This like most alternators fitted to a marine engines is not self exciting.The usual method of excitation is a small globe of around 2 watts connected between 12V ignition on and the D+ terminal on the rear of the alternator. The light goes out after starting the engine because the alternator becomes self excited when being turning at the required rpm. Stephen Hughes Marine Electrical.
