The Jurys still out on sound quality. But I didn't expect a studio mic.
So, it still picks up a lot of sounds from behind the mic, like from behind me! That is a little disappointing but it is a huge improvement over the built in microphone on my Sony AX43A Handycam.®The difference between gun and zoom is also not really distinct but maybe the zoom is crisper. But for taking videos of my son at the zoo and finally being able to hear what he is saying well that is worth it to me! So, I am being fair and giving it 4 stars because it does do what I need it to but not as well as Sonys advertising video for the Sony AX43A Handycam® made it sound and got me to buy it! In their video almost all background noise was eliminated well it's not that good!

Plug-and-play baby
So I bought this yesterday and I almost returned it before I received it due to some of the reviews. I just want to say that when I got this microphone I attached it to my Sony a6000 and it worked right away. The quality improvement over the microphone built into the camera is like four times better. The tintieness of the microphone is gone and is now very clear. I'm actually about to film a cat shelter video using a Sony a6000 in this microphone. I am please with my product, thank you.

Works good .... I think?
I bought this microphone to use on the Sony HDR-CX675 camera. It connects to the camera very easily. The switch has a the following settings, off, zoom, gun. When I turn to zoom or gun it does not have anything (a light?) telling me it is on. The camera does not tell me it is on or working? Unless I am missing a ikon or light on the screen (that is very small). I have have used it a few times and I think it is working? The sound is fine but I really don't have a side by side comparison. Will keep it and would probably buy again but gave it 4 stars due to the on/off issue. Maybe someone will tell me if I am missing something. thx

Great basic mic, y all the bad reviews?
Look its not a professional mic. But as far as a basic mic on a camera it works great it records my voice behind the camera, and I've recorded kids voice over 100ft away if aimed properly. Now I'm not saying its mind blowing audio but it works fine. Good enough for youtube. Also fits my sony fx3 camera. I use it FOR NOW, instead of the xlr handle, because the xlr handle draws to much attention in public. And its youtube folks, not national geographic.

Doesn't really improve recording on Sony RX100 ii
I used the mic on my Sony RX100 ii to try and improve on the quality of the recording sound. I did a trial on this mic and the built in mic. After quite a bit of recording, I could not see any difference in the recorded audio. After my test, I am begining to wonder if it is supported on my camera. I ended up returning the mic. Perhaps a higher quality mic would work better.

So Good
I got this mic and have been using it for at least 2 months and it's almost too good. I rarely have to worry about sound quality with this and the windscreen that comes with the package works well enough. It's not as directional as I'd like it to be, but it does an amazing job at picking up all sounds in any direction from the microphone.

Better than internal mic (a6000 user)
Im honestly not sure why this is rated so poorly. I have the a6000 and was so tired of the internal mic. It just didn't do the job. I didn't want to drop an extra $400 or more to upgrade to an a6300 just for the mic input. If your camera doesn't have a mic input like the a6000, this certainly is better than just the internal mic.

A win for Sony
When I bought this mic I was looking for a better way to record professional audio on the go. I did some research and heard some mixed reviews regarding this model. Because of the midrange price I decided to go for it. Turns out it’s actually pretty great. It’s very portable with its carrying bag and clips directly on to my Sony camera. The Audio is clean and doesn’t pick up much of what it’s not pointed at. When I mix the audio in Final Cut Pro it sounds even better! Very crisp. I would definitely recommend to anyone starting out with a Sony camera
