Q: Does it go in the dishwasher?

OMG NO!! The temperature to kill the bacteria living in feces/poop has to be BOILING literally - 212 degrees (or higher depending on your geographic altitude) Fahrenheit - and some of the bacteria you have to boil 20 minutes before they die. There is no water heater or dishwasher that works at that temp. Just don't do it!

Q: I want a scooper that picks up smaller clumps. Will this one retain those annoying small bits ? Already have a metal one for large clumps.

It definitely catches clumps "smaller than a raisin" (one review here suggested otherwise). The grate spacing is 4mm (according to the specs they listed) which is about 1/8th of an inch (teensy bit larger). Take a tape measure out & you'll see how small that is. It's about the perfect size for me–if much smaller, the clumping clay litter I use would quickly clog the scoop, letting no litter through. Any larger and it would let larger clumps of litter through (making it no better than the standard plastic scoop I have). There will still be small clumps that get through (there are scoops on Amazon that have smaller grate holes, but as reviews I read noted, it takes a very long time to get through the litter because they so readily clog). This one is the goldilocks size for me.

Q: Does the metal go all the way into the handle ?

There is NO flex in the handle. Solid.
