The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes Set in the Victorian Age and regarded by many as the finest of the fourteen films in the Sherlock Holmes/Basil Rathbone series, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was originally released in 1939 by Twentieth Century-Fox. Professor Moriarty (George Zucco) has at long last been brought to trial for murder, but the Napoleon of Crime is acquitted after the court finds a lack of sufficient evidence. Moriarty wastes no time in plotting his next crime, but in order to be successful he must divert the attention of the Great Detective. Intimidating, anonymous letters sent to young socialite Ann Brandon (Ida Lupino) ; the murder of Miss Brandons brother; and threats to the security of a priceless gem consume the attention of Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his companion Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce). Are these mysterious occurrences simply erroneous distractions? Are they clues to a case irrelevant to the exploits of the evil Professor Moriarty? Or, are these portents of disaster inexorably linked to the master criminals plan to commit a crime that will shake the very foundation of the British Empire? It is for Holmes and Watson to sort out these mysteries and, hopefully, eliminate the menace of Professor Moriarty.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Basil Rathbone has to be the definitive Sherlock Holmes for me. 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' was the first of fourteen films produced by Universal Studios featuring Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson. This is a great introduction to the series and well worth renting or buying it to keep,

Classic Sherlock Holmes
Classic Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone great entertainment even today. I think Basil Rathbone is probably the best Sherlock Holmes, he interprets the character so well that you believe it. The film is beautifully shot with a great cast and very entertaining if you are into Sherlock Holmes stories.

Excellent Adventures
This is the MPI 2004 DVD (US version) of 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes', this has an English audio and English subtitles. The is also a commentary by Richard Valley, a photo gallary, some trailers and some interesing production notes. The film, which has some great production values, it looks really good, is about Moriarty trying to distract Holmes with another case so that Moriarty can go unnoticed while stealing the Crown Jewels. The case that Homes works on seems too convoluted if not a little too melodramatic to be taken seriously and after a while becomes a little too silly, still it's an entertaining entry in the Holmes film library.
