The NIV Inclusive Language edition reflects throughout the equality of the sexes taught in both Creation and Redemption..
Contrary to common opinion, both Old and New Testaments are witness to the equality of the sexes, hence this Edition.1. The Bible's human anthropology is established firmly equal in Creation. Genesis clearly distinguishes between the human species (Hebrew "adam") and man/woman (Hebrew "ish/ishah." which may also be translated "husband/wife.") Adam is a boys' name in English but when God created us he began with ADAM, a creature distinguished less by gender as by being made from the ADAMAH (Hebrew "ground, dust.") The connection between the words is obvious, deliberate and refers to the contingent nature of BOTH sexes. At the crown of the creation narrative in Genesis 1.27 we read of the equality of the sexes, and by implication of the non-gendered essence of God's nature: "So God created man in his own image...male and female he created them." This contains profound truth about God and ourselves. Both male and female are made in God's image while God, in whose image they are both made, is clearly not partial to one sex. Given that the Bible was written during a period of Patriarchy, the Hebrew Scriptures show a remarkable forwardness here.2. Equality is, however, God's intention not only in Creation, but also in Redemption. The creation-words of Genesis concerning the image of God borne by both sexes are solemnly quoted by Jesus when questioned about divorce by the patriarchal Pharisees (Matthew 19). Later Jesus' attitude of equality is reflected in the crowning statement of human anthropology given by the Apostle Paul "there is neither Jew nor Greek....male nor female for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3.28) Having said this, the New Testament's description of God the Father and God the Son is not dumped by this edition. Pictorial language is inevitable in dealing with the Infinite and it would be surprising if language arising from a universally patriarchal period did not reflect that. It is perhaps wise also not to tamper with the Father-Son syntax describing a God whose being is Other even when come in the flesh. It is, however, the golden thread of Creation-Redemption HUMAN anthropology that the NIV Inclusive Language Edition reflects throughout.I would thoroughly recommend this as a pew Bible, even if it were not so cheap!

NIV Inclusive Language Edition
This is the Inclusive Language Version of the NIV Bible. It is not available in America, unfortunately, so I was happy to be able to buy it over the internet. I hope that a "study" edition comes out soon. ..
