The handle shape has finger grooves that allows for a comfortable grip. BTW the tool is well constructed and I have had for 15-20 years.

The handle of the slate remover is impressed with "Made in USA"

Q: How long is the blade, without the handle? That is, how far under a slate tile will this reach?

From the handle to the curved part of the tip, the length is a little over 22 inches. The handle is approx. 1/8" thicker than the blade and if needed will also fit under an existing slate to allow for the insertion of a new slate under the existing and over the upper most batten. It's worked fine for me in all applications.

Q: How thick is this bar

The AJC is 3/32 " thick. FYI, I like it over the Dasco Pro which I also have. The Dasco is 7/32 " thick but tapers like a knife blade at the very tip
