changed my review to 5 stars
Updated review: I'm changing my review to 5 stars. I really like these lights and originally had certain expectations that were not in keeping with the manufacturers intent. These are designed to provide indoor lighting without overwhelming you with flood lighting. They work great and I actually ordered another pair. I may order two more after that If I have a need. If you need spot area lighting these are great and very compact. Stairways at night, hallways at night, walk in closets, etc.. They are more for lower level lighting. I especially like this in our walk in closet when I have to get up before my wife. The light automatically gives me enough light to see without spilling out in to the room and waking my wife. I have three different versions of Mr. Beams and they all work great. Excellent battery life as well. Mr. Beams is my go to lighting for this type.I love Mr. Beams products and will continue to purchase. Their outdoor lights are great and 5 stars across the board. The only problem I have with this light is that it needs to be advertised as a night light. The brightness is nothing close to their other lights and really qualifies only as a glorified night light. Its not very bright, which for a night light is great. Also, the motion detection is not nearly as good as their other products. I have this resting above a door frame, and another at waist level on the stair. I have to pass pretty far out of the door before it will pick me up and on the stairs I have to be pretty close as well. The side motion detection is pretty limited too. For the price they're ok and might fit your needs. I actually just purchased another Mr. Beams during Black Friday that is cheaper than this and will provide better light and motion detection. Again, Mr. Beams are great, but this should really be advertised as a motion detector night light.

Long lasting and effective
I’ve been using these Mr. Beams MB532 Motion-Sensing LED Step/Stair Lights outdoors on my back porch for the last 10 years. They are fantastic. Change the batteries maybe one a year, if that. I finally got around to buying more and putting them at the front gate and steps and they are working just as well. I especially like that they turn off and don’t contribute to light pollution. These are bright enough to see what’s going on without waking up your neighbors 3 blocks over like you do with these LED flood lights people have lately. They are bright enough to see the ground or stairs where I’m walking, find my keys and open the door and then they shut off. Perfect.

Very Effective Dependent on Specific Needs
I'm pleasantly surprised by how well these lights accomplish the tasks I require of them. It is important to understand, however, that how effective these lights are very much depends on the specific circumstances they are used for. First off, I have read in several reviews (and in the claims of the manufacturer itself) that these lights only work in total darkness. Not true. One of these lights is mounted about the door of my bedroom. With my 50" TV on and a 60W light near my bed on, about 15 feet away, the light will still turn on. I installed this light becaise my light switch is not right next to my door and I wanted some light when I entered the room so I could see and get to the light switches. It works perfect in this set up. The end of my bed is about 5 feet from the spot below the light. My movement, while I am laying down, does not trigger the light. As soon as I get up, the light triggers. The light is just bright enough to allow me to see my path and things in the way, but doesn't "light up" the room, which is what I was hoping for. If you are expecting these lights to be flood lights, forget it. But if you are looking for low wattage lighting just enough to make a path or area visible, these are perfect. Coming in the door from outside, as soon as I open the door, the light triggers. My door opens out to the pool deck. I installed a light on the wall of the house to provide a light near my door so I can see to use the key. That light works great there, too. My only concern is that the lights are powered by 3 C babatteruies. These are heavy and not known to last long. I wonder why it isn't powered by button batteries instead.

Mr Beams 532 = excellent!
Mr Beams are the best motion detecting battery-operated lights I’ve ever bought.I’ve had these for over six years and they’re still going strong. I have one on the inside post of my front porch steps. It’s never failed to work, even with the “big freeze” here in Texas in February 2021. On dim during night and when it detects motion it goes bright. One extra positive…it lets me know when critters come to my porch steps (I usually sit next to my living room front window). It’s easy to tell when the batteries get weak as it constantly cycles on as if motion was detected. And the batteries last several months. Never really kept track but six months, at least.I use another as a night light in my bathroom. I set it on top of the medicine cabinet. Light is soft enough to work as a night light. When I need to get up in the middle of the night I can see enough to get to the bathroom. Once inside it detects me and goes bright. Easily enough to do “business” yet not blindingly light as turning on the 60-75 watt overhead light.

Nice option for deck stairs
Purchased a set of 2 lights for the stairs on my back deck. Very easy install, it comes with the screws you'll need and then the light just hooks onto the screws (think of a wall clock with a hole in the back for the nail). You do have to unscrew the back plate of the light to access the battery compartment which makes sense since the lights are subject to rain/snow conditions. Lights take 2 C batteries each and are supposed to last a year assuming 8 20 second on/off cycles per day.I have the lights installed and in use for about 2 months now and have no complaints. They were easy to install, the motion sensor is relatively sensitive so it picks up my smaller dog easily & turns on for him. And these lights are BRIGHT. The area by my deck is in shadow from the flood light I have out there (the deck itself blocks light to the stairs) and 2 of these are enough to make it light as day on the steps.

Light up the darkest alley
This is the fourth time I have bought this item, think they are fantastic for lighting up the walkway around my house, oldest one I have is 5 years and still working fine, just replace batteries every so often. Work very well and lights up a good area when activated by motion

Mr. Beams battery powered and motion triggered LEDs
Update: I have now owned these for 9 years, still look new, still work as good as the day I installed them AND I still haven't had to replace the batteries!!!I ordered these in the hope of saving much labour and avoiding a wiring job on my back steps. I take the dog down those back steps at least once per evening in the dark and have been using these lights now for about 4 months. The light is still strong (and so must be the C-cell batteries), they switch on immediately and go off shortly thereafter (as I have set them to do). I have four of them and they do what I needed them to do, dependably, cheaply and just plain well. Easy to mount, and will be easy to replace the batteries too, whenever that might finally be necessary. No sign of power loss yet though... Great design (water tight too), great execution (-10C at the moment and working just as well as always), just be sure to save your money be ordering them by the two-pack rather than individually.
