Q: Is it safe to use these in 1/2" thick soft wood and not risk splitting the wood where the line of nails would be?

1/2" wood is not enough thick for this nailhaeds, their shank length is Longer than wood thickness (it's little longer than 1/2"), they may not damage the wood but their tip may pop out from the backside.

Q: Are there any upholstery tacks made for outdoor furniture?

We had, made by stainless steel for outdoors but because of low demand we have canceled it.
