A beautiful, well-made figure that's close to being perfect
Overall I'm very happy with this piece, with some admittedly personal caveats which I will explain. A summary of my opinions is at the bottom. As a big admirer of Jim Woodring's sense of design I was less impressed with the design of "Lorbo" than I have been with most of his other creatures, but it was such an unusual piece that I wanted it anyway. Despite the figure not being in a dynamic pose, it has design elements, including asymmetries and color, that keep the eye interested and moving around the figure.I have the green version and the painting is excellent, applied richly, and precisely enough to look good while still reminding you it was painted by hand. The base color of the vinyl seems to be a lovely bright yellow and the rest of the colors have been applied heavily enough for that yellow to be preserved as a very effective accent.Despite not feeling like the "Sofubi" type of small-batch soft vinyl I was hoping it would be- with the slightly translucent vinyl that can really produce unique colors- the rigid plastic is precise and well-molded with no visible mold marks whatsoever. The unpainted vinyl that remains visible is beautifully glossy and remains faintly translucent. The arms and head give the figure enough articulation to give it some dynamism. It came packaged in a plastic bag with "Lorbo" printed on it in translucent ink, stapled to a folded card sporting a lovely Jim Woodring illustration. Reminiscent of a cheap toy you might find in a supermarket, it has great kitch value. I think it was a lost opportunity not to lean into this aesthetic by manufacturing the figure in Sofubi soft-vinyl, but again, that was my own preconception and it certainly would have increased its price and decreased its availability. In conclusion:Design: 3/5 - Not my favorite Woodring design, but still grotesquely appealingConstruction: 4.5/5 - Despite its kitchy presentation my expectations of Sofubi were my own, and it's very well manufacturedPaint: 5/5 - Bright, bold colors, airbrushed often in several layers, applied with care and precision, make this a beautiful objectPackaging/presentation: 5/5 - Presenting as a cheap retro toy in a bag stapled to card, packaging has good kitch value and a beautiful Woodring illustration, worth preserving
