Thanks for your question, The diameter is 4.5 inches. You can definitely use it as a planter. Just be aware there is no holes on the bottom for watering.

What do you mean size? Do you mean are they for small children or adults? Regular size ping-pong balls (comes with 12). The cans are great. They are very sturdy, have handles, stack really well, and do not blow around in the wind. I would say they are 3/4 quart size.
