Sturdy piece. The string included is important to install so you don't get locked in.

tight hole for shackle lock.
This has a ball that prevents someone from opening the gate by just pushing the fencepost to the left, as our previous lock did. Problem: the largest hole just barely fits a shackle of diameter 8.02mm. Our lock says 5/16in which is 7.94mm but I measured 8.02 so maybe it's the fault of our lock. Yeah, it's Master :(

Just what I needed
This latch is indeed made of heavy duty steel. It is overcoated black with paint or powder coating. I am using this on the gate access to my backyard. Mounting was easy--the latch is mounted on the edge of a 2X4, and the bolt is mounted on the gate. The gate latches easily and firmly as the gate is closed. The added cord for unlatching from the front of the gate is a nice addition (not every latch unit comes with one). For best function, the bolt unit must be tightly screwed in place.

Sturdy
Took me a while to purchase it as the photos look too thin and might break easy. After a few review reading took the risk and these are actually very good and durable locks. I like that it comes with the outside pull string. Screws are long enough to keep them in place. Sturdy and easy to install too.
