If you are owned by a cat or dog, you very well may be familiar with the ever repeating, " I want to go out" / "I want to come in" pet problem. We have a substantial Iron and glass 3 hinge door that opens onto our screened in back porch. Our cat likes to be out there until he decides he wants ro come in again and then out again and then....To accommodate his comings and goings we left the door closed but not latched. This works as far as him being able to come and go as he pleased, BUT because the door did not have an automatic closer, the door was, more often than not, wide open; letting out the air conditioned air and hot humid air in during the summer months -or- the freezing cold air in and the heated air out during the winter months. I needed something that would allow our cat to open the door by himself, but also close it after him just enough to prevent the outside temperatures from getting in and the inside temperature from getting out. I purchased a set of 2 Berlin Modisch 4" x 4" Mortise Spring Hinges, hoping they would do just that. I am happy to report that they work for my purpose perfectly. And I only had to install one. These hinge screw holes match the old hinge plates exactly, so no drilling or filling was required. After installation it was just a matter of adjusting the tension springs so that the door closes but does not latch.These Berlin Modisch 4" x 4" Mortise Spring Hinges are of excellent quality and I highly recommend them.

I have a 3 foot/915mm heavy, outside door. When the house was built 1 self closing hinge was used. The spring broke from overload.This heavy wide door should have 3 of these self closing hinges, I used 3. These 4" hinges matched the cutouts my old 4" hinges had. Most of the screw holes lined up. I replaced 1 hinge at a time and it was easy. Then adjusted for a light to medium spring pressure on each hinge. I adjusted each hinge to the same tension.They work well and smoothly. The door closes smoothly and not too fast, it does not bang. Springs in the hinges are not over-stressed.Since all the hinges are the same, the door swings smoothly. Before mixing self closing and standard hinges caused a slight bind since the hing centers were off slightly.I bought these even though they cost a little more than similar ones listed. I did this for reliability and durability. And since they are UL marked grade 1. As I understand it, they should take 1,000,000 or more opening and closings. I don't expect to ever need to replace these again.

Okay, so, I don't normally leave reviews. Most things I buy on Amazon are just okay or subpar. And I have better things to do than to bitch about a product online. But, these hinges are the exception.Took less than 10 minutes to install 3 hinges. Pro tip, do one at a time starting in the middle. Then the other two if you do all three. I have a pretty heavy door so just assumed I would need all 3, however probably coulda got away with two with more tension.(I have all three on two turns).As mentioned I have a heavy solid wood door. I ordered these assuming they probably wouldn't totally close the door, but at least it would negate the kids leaving the door open all the time... Welp, I they fully close the door with only half of the recommended tension per hinge! Pretty frickin amazing.I rent an apartment. I'm always looking for little upgrades/modifications that I can do without wrecking the place, and these fit the bill quite nicely.These hinges are beautiful and well crafted. It's nice buying something affordable that doesn't come from China for a change.Idk I can go on forever. These are worth every penny. One hinge is the same price as a cheap standard hinge from China from my local hardware store. Stop looking and grab these.

We own a 1960's era house. Our side door in the garage opened to the inside, which made no sense considering that it was located right next to the car, and there is 15" of space to open the door, not even leaving enough space to get through the door with a car parked in the garage.To bypass this, we have been using the front door to access the yard, rendering the door useless.So we purchased a new door, which now opens to the outside, making life a little easier.But that means we also have an exterior door with outward facing hinges. Not cool for me, but great for a would be theif.These hinges are pin-less. Nothing a would-be-theif can do to take the hinge off short using a power saw, by which time a neighbor would see them (this door is visible from, and close to, the street).These were easy to install. Like, took me less than 2 minutes apiece.My confusion (and the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars) lies with the instructions and the pins/hex key. I see where you use the hex key, but I am not a professional. I am a layman. I have no idea what these are for or what I'm supposed to do with them.
