What a way to end 2016! Ponniyin Selvan, my first historical fiction book! This is the second book in the series. Such a beautiful story and wonderful characters! Can't wait to read the third book. The translator has done justice to the original writing. However, I believe nothing can equal the original; hence the 4 star rating.

Kalki's tale of Raja Raja Chola is famed among Tamizhs. Vandiyathevan, Kundhavai and Arulmozhi are household names. But the language barrier that kept me from accessing the great story just melted away. While the editing could be tighter (typos and repetition of paragraphs), the translation is true to the original modern epic, preserving with high fidelity not just some of the tamizh words but the cultural sense.

Loved this book. The first book took time for me to get used to the storytelling. The second one is unbelievably good!

Super sequel to part1.. can't wait to read the next parts.. brilliant, and evocative of the Chola period.. the internecine feuds, royal intrigues, the saivite era coexisting with Buddhism, the maritime glory of the cholas.. but above all, the friendships and the romantic relationships... in one word, WOW!
