A great support for a beginner
I bought this book to practice the flute on my own. I started about a month ago, and I see a teacher regularly, but I also like to be able to explore this instrument by myself, and this book is the perfect tool for it! It first introduces three notes, and right from the start there are short and amusing tunes to practice playing these. As new notes and their fingering are introduced, the songs gradually incorporate those, and slowly the author brings the beginner to different keys (other than C major). This book does not in any way replace a live teacher, but it provides an interesting companion to my practices. There are original tunes by the author, and simplified adaptations of all genres, mostly from the Renaissance period and a few Xmas/children traditional ones. There are also many songs for two players (two students, or teacher/student). My only regret is not having a companion CD to listen to. For a beginner it would a have been a great help to be able to hear those songs before actually attempting to play them. You can always try to get free MIDI files from various websites, as many songs are from famous composers. This first book focuses on a firm tone in the lower register (lower D to C sharp in the first half), and ventured slightly in the higher register up to G, in the last few songs. I was also puzzled that the F minor key was introduced at this point, without any explanation (while E major's first appearance with Jingle Bells, also introduced early, seemed easier for some reason).I highly recommend buying a fingering chart as a companion ( Flute Fingering Chart: For Flute and Piccolo (Amsco Fingering Charts) ), instead of flipping through this book for it.

Good as a supplement but not for primary lesson book.
I've been teaching flute for about 30 years now and am always on the look out for something better. I haven't used this book with one of my students yet since I just got it, but I have some reservations. It seems that some pretty advanced rhythms are introduced right away at the beginning of the book, but then not used again. Eighth notes are used in cut time, but sixteenth notes have yet to be introduced.Slurring is introduced right away. I find that students need to have a well-developed tongue before they slur, and if their sense if rhythm isn't already developed, (and it won't be by the time it's introduced in this book) slurring tends to skew the amount of time they give to the notes.I'm also not really sold on the order that the notes are introduced after the standard B, A and G. And, unless the student progresses very quickly, I feel that the level of playing by the end of this book is actually pretty advanced.I think that this book would be great for a beginner who is at least in their teens, or for an adult. Or, maybe for a student who already has previous musical experience, such as piano. I think that I will definitely use it as a supplement/sight reading source to other books that I use, but not as a primary lesson book.

A Very Good Flute Book
I have not yet completed the book, having only worked my way up to page 19. Having said that, I am very impressed with what I have seen so far. This book provides a great combination of tunes and exercises to develop skills and improve sound. The author adds in jokes and cartoons to break up any potential monotony. The book is arranged in a common sense order to slowly, but methodically, improve my playing. I look forward to seeing the remainder of the book.

Good for Beginner Flutist
I bought several beginner flute books to teach my daughter the flute and this is a pretty good book overall. I would have preferred a little more info on the playing the flute than what was provided - you get a couple pages of basic flute concepts, a couple pages of music theory, and then the rest of the book is a collection of songs to play along with some a few tips. This book would probably pair well with a flute instructor expounding on what the book introduces, but may not provide enough detail if you are trying to learn the flute on your own. If that's you I would suggest checking YouTube as there are great introductory flute lessons that provide the visual and detail you need to learn some of the core basic concepts.

This is an excellent book to use for beginning flute students
This is an excellent book to use for beginning flute students. It has application for a vast level of student ability. I use this to teach both my beginners and also students who have been playing a couple of years. Wye teaches very beginning concepts such as how to hold the flute, make and sound, music notation and reading beginning rhythms. What's nice about this book is it covers basic techniques like finger exercises and scalework in an interesting way so that it can be used by more advanced students. The exercises are short and easy to complete between lessons insuring the student's do not get bored drilling the same lines for weeks. As a teacher, I highly recommend this book to other flute teachers and music educators.

Very clear and helpful
I have played other instruments, but never the flute. This was the book I started with for self-teaching. It did get me off the ground, and I'm now at the point I think I need a teacher. The instructions are good, clear and backed up with enough information to give you a feel for how the care and cleaning of the instrument impacts the music.

My Favorite!
One great quality of a teacher is the ability to maintain student interest and entertain while simultaneously educating. Trevor Wye's wit and humor makes this one of the best instructional books. The exercises are level appropriate however I would not recommend this as a beginner's first book. It's perfect if you have been playing for a while and you would just like some reinforcement exercises. The piano accompaniment on the CD enhances the flute learning experience.

... am a flautist and teacher and this is the best beginner flute book I've found
I am a flautist and teacher and this is the best beginner flute book I've found. It's got a lot of counting up front, which is tricky for some students, but spends enough time in the low range that students can really develop a good tone before they move on to a broader range. For students that have some experience with rhythm (even in a school music class) it's really great.

Excellent
I am an adult learner and am trying to teach myself from videos and books. I initially started off with a different beginner flute book and after a couple of weeks felt I was stuck, not being able to progress with my tone. I've only had this book for a few days but already I feel like my tone is improving on the lower register. This book is packed with lots of different music to practice with and they are enjoyable to learn. There are fingering charts for each new note to go along with the music. I am enjoying my flute again after feeling very frustrated. I'll be using the Trevor Wye books from now on as they are so comprehensive. I am picking up my flute several times a day now and actually look forward to practice!

A basic tutor for the flute
I'm not a learner but 30 years ago was quite competent on the flute. Now, at the age of 93, a relative gave me a flute and I'm trying to re-learn the instrument. I have no difficulty with reading music , being a competent clarinetist, but I find this tutor useful in regaining blowing and fingering techniques which seem to have deserted me over the years. It's a well printed and presented publication by the well-known Trevor Wye. I recommend it for young beginners of this instrument.

The best flute book for beginners
Well structured tutor book with clear explanations on all aspects of flute playing. Nice tunes that students enjoy playing, challenging in some way but not too difficult, perfect to keep you engaged. What I really love about this book is the fact that it not only uses the most popular keys like most beginner books. Be prepared to all sorts of major and minor keys. This method really improved my sight-reading and also my understanding of the different keys. Suitable for complete beginners and gives a deep knowledge of the basic music theory aswell, more detailed than most flute books of the same level. My copy arrived with a cd enclosed that contained 42 of the tunes from the book, first played by a flutist, then followed by a backing for the student to play. This is another highlight for me, what I did, I played the music from the sheet music by myself first, then listened to the flute player on the recording if I got all notes, etc right. Then I practiced with the backing until I was happy with it. I can highly recommend this book to all beginners and restarters. I would also suggest to download a metronome app to your mobile for the other pieces that are not included on the cd if you learn to play the flute without a live tutor. By the end of this book all aspects of my flute playing improved and now I'm on book 2.

Does not teach music score correctly or how to play certain notes
I am a beginner to the flute but I am music teacher (guitar and piano). So I can say that the teaching music part of the book is quite poor, often putting in new symbols but without explanation.UPDATE: I’m halfway through and a new score has appeared with two new notes, low c and d. Yet here are no diagrams or explanation of how to 0lay these notes so I needed to get another book that includes them. This is basic stuff, you introduce a new notes, you supply a finger diagram and any advice - there was none. Reducing to one star.

hold it are good. Music theory is introduced really gradually
This is a very progressive book. It doesn't have a DVD, but the explanations on the flute itself, How to assemble it, hold it are good. Music theory is introduced really gradually: i.e. a note like B is first introduced; it is shown written on the stave; it's then shown with the fingering which is well described. It starts speaking on tone and proposes to exercise this. (this is an exercise that James Galway takes an hour every day to perform the tone until the sound becomes beautiful). I have just bought volume 2 and the omnibus edition: Trevor Wye Practice Books for Flute: Omnibus Books 1 to 51 Jan 2001by Trevor WyeSpiral-bound from amazon, indeed. I intend to go very progressively, until my tone becomes really beautiful. Trevor wye concentrates on this very production of a beautiful tone.In book 1, there are lots of pieces for practice alredy, both for musicla theory and reading of it, and simply to practice the learned notes. It's a very inspiring tutor, no frills, just the underlining advice to progress at your own pace, without rushing, to really absorb completely how to play and eventually perform. I highly recommend the whole series of book practice by Trevor Wye. It's not expensive for the valuable teachings and advice you get.
