I did get a few in mine, but I don't know if that was representative of the tin or just luck!

How many cards total?

5 packs of 9 cards each, plus the 5 promo cards, would be 50 cards in total. Also a reminder - this is a Heroic Champion Excalibur tin, not the Evolzar Dolkka tin - Bay 94-C

Should I start out collecting yu gi oh cards by buying a tin or buying some starter packs?

I would suggest starter packs until you get everything down but this is just the tin. No cards are inside.
