Horror
Forget the re-make, this is the original and best. It's a "Friday The 13th" style slasher movie set in a small mining town that many years ago suffered a tradgedy concerning miners trapped down below after an explosion on Valentines day.The only survivor was rescued weeks later, completely insane after having to eat the bodies of his co workers to stay alive, and escapes from the looney bin to disappear for years but not before he puts a curse on the town warning them to never celebrate Valentines day again.Present day and guess what?, the local youngsters decide it's time to forget old curses and have a Valentines dance, but get this, they hold it in the mine where all the trouble began. The bodies soon start to litter the place and what you end up with is a great game of cat and mouse deep underground in the spooky tunnels and shafts of the abandoned areas but who is doing the killing?, a copycat killer or has the original fruit cake returned?.This is an excellent horror movie with it's tongue firmly wedged in it's cheek, check out the really awful poems the killer sends his victims in Valentines cards before the big mine climax.

My Bloody Valentine (Original Version - Blu-ray Review)
Years ago a criminally insane murderer is locked up after being aggressively fuelled by Valentine's Day disappointments. In the present day, as the same festive period approaches, it would appear he's back and rather peeved about things, venting his homicidal frustration on the locals of the mining town where his morbid history lies. A group of resident teens in the same town hold a Valentine's party against the wishes of the local authorities - they try to shut down any celebrations after warning messages turn up (accompanied by a couple of corpses). After the police fail to prevent the party from going ahead, the miner-suited nutcase goes on the rampage, knocking off the teens one by one.Slasher movie that doesn't deviate from the rules (do any of them?). It is pretty well put together, however, and strengthened by a dramatic love triangle at the centre of it all (involving the amazingly nubile Lori Hallier). The teens are typically idiotic (hell, was I that bad?) and generally deserving of what comes to some of them - this is part of the fun with these kinds of movies. The murders are (depending on which version you watch - there are two cuts on the disc) surprisingly brutal for the period, aided by strong gore effects that Tom Savini would have been proud of. Whilst it plods along for the most part setting up its characters and locations, the film's winning card is the mine shaft sequence during the final act of the film. Utilising a genuine mine, the place is scary enough without the stupid teens going down there for a little loving, but then the killer obviously follows them too, leading us to a great showdown preceded by atmospheric wanderings around. Like any good slasher, My Bloody Valentine is not a masterpiece and is confined by the very genre it sits in, but it is one of the better examples and will give you a reasonable evening's viewing. The Blu-ray presents a very surprising image - in full HD (at 1.78:1) this movie looks superb, a lot better than one would have expected. Clarity is excellent, detail is high, and colours bold - definitely the one to go for rather than plain old DVD. Sound does not fair so well and is clearly limited by the period - you get choices of DTS HD surround, or the original mono track (I went for the latter, seeing as this is how the movie was originally screened). You can watch the theatrical cut as it is or with the deleted scenes splice back in. The quality of these shots is a little inferior to the rest of the movie, however, I would urge horror fans to watch this longer cut - it really is a much more gory and potent offering! The disc also comes with an average twenty minute featurette, looking at both My Bloody Valentine movies, along with a few other slashers in a bid to contextualise this one in its genre. The deleted scenes can also be watched separate to the movie. There is in addition a trailer for the film, a Lionsgate promotional section, plus a large text-based feature on the history of horror movies - this is interactive so you can pick and choose different eras/genres to read about. Not quite deserving of the special edition tag, this Blu-ray is nevertheless a great buy for slasher fans and lovers of 80s horror on the strength of its transfer, and bloody uncut status.

MINER 49er AND CLEMENTINE
My Bloody Valentine, R1 special edition DVD. 1981.The picture quality's great, 16:9 no black bars, the unratedfootage which you can watch as part of the film?, that's notso great, but it's still perfectly watchable. Manic miner startsoffing the townsfolk just in time for the big valentines day/night dance.Naturally after a few drinks you're going to want a crafty afterhours tour of the mine!. Way above average horror high jinx, excellent & bloody fx that make some horror films look tame.A massive thank you for the reviewer(s) for this next bit of info-get the Lionsgate special edition, it's the one with the minerholding the heart shaped chocolate/candy box, the other version, the one with the red thin hand drawn heart on the cover is apparentlycut. Run time 90min (not sure if that's with the extra footage).Extras:Bloodlust-My Bloody Valentine & the rise of the slasher film--Bloodlines, an interactive horror film history- deleted footagewith introductions.

great presentation of a key slasher film
This is a very good presentation of the original My Bloody Valentine. The picture is sharp and the extras are very good. There's a 5.1 DD soundtrack and a original-mono-soundtrack as well. You can watch the film in the pg-like-rated theatrical version, which has nearly no gory scenes at all or in the extended cut with all the famous special effects, which in fact are pretty good. You can also watch the deleted footage with introductions by the film makers. Then there's a not so very interesting 20-min film about the slasher film, which you can watch or just not. There are English and Spanish subtitles as well. The Aspect Ratio is 1.78:1 not: 16:9 - 2.35:1 as wrongly stated. With the original aspect ratio being 1.85 : 1, this is just fine.

Canadian love fest horror.
There is no way to describe how much I prefer this to the sappy remake. Here, the kills are amazing, the feel is one of insanity and the suspense is an actual thing. Highly recommend.
